What I Learned from Princess Poppy
Kristin O'Malley, President and CEO

I'm reluctant to admit it-and half-hoping you won't believe it. One of my mentors is a troll--not one of those provocative-posting cyber trolls who purposefully disrupts online discussion groups. My superhero is a spunky little pink-haired, pink-skinned do-gooder named Princess Poppy. What's more this pink paragon (who's cooler than a pack of peppermints) sings!

OK, Poppy is from the Dreamworks' 2016 animated film, Trolls, but hear me out. This gal's a problem-solver, collaborator and social activist. When the evil, troll-eating Bergens kidnap her friends, she not only steps up and saves them, but also convinces the enemy's king that peace and love (not a steady troll diet) are the keys to a happily-ever-after. Talk about driving social change!

So what has Princess Poppy taught me about civic leadership? STEP UP: IT STARTS WITH YOU. While troll-rescuing isn't part of the Foundation's Civic Leadership mission, investing in our community leaders is.  Last fall, we brought the Institute for Nonprofit Practice's (INP) Core Certificate Program to the Cape through a first-ever funder collaborative.

For the past six months, I have participated in this intensive, award-winning training program with 15 other nonprofit leaders from across the Cape and Islands.
Each one fits the Poppy-prototype perfectly: intelligent, resourceful, articulate, creative and determined to make our community better. These leaders opened their hearts, minds (and busy calendars) to this new educational experience because they want to become better problem-solvers, stronger collaborators and more powerful agents of change. For our community.  For us. I can't think of a more worthwhile investment to make.

We are now powering up a second class for sixteen more nonprofit superheroes. And, we will continue to look for new resources and opportunities that strengthen our nonprofit organizations, the heartbeat of our community.

Leadership Program Powers Up! for Year 2
We are thrilled to announce YEAR 2 of the Institute for Nonprofit Practice's (INP) Core Certificate Program, paving the way for another group of nonprofit leaders on Cape Cod to benefit from this award-winning educational experience.

The Cape Cod Foundation facilitated YEAR 1 of this powerful program through a first-ever funder collaborative.  Last fall, eight funders, who believed in strengthening the local nonprofit sector on Cape Cod, joined forces to underwrite the cost of this incredible initiative: Bilezikian Family Foundation, The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation, The Cape Cod Foundation, Cape and Islands United Way, Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation, Cape Cod Healthcare Community Benefits, Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, and the Edward Bangs Kelley and Elza Kelley Foundation. The inaugural class (picture above) graduated this spring.

In partnership with the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University, the nonprofit management and leadership program provides nonprofit leaders with the intensive, comprehensive, and applicable professional development experiences, tools, networks, and strategies they need to ensure organizational excellence and drive social change. INP, recognized as a 2017 Social Innovation Forum Innovator, was also recently highlighted in the Boston Globe and the Chronicle of Philanthropy
