Summertime is flying buy, we enjoyed the fireworks, barbecues and celebrations - and have the sun burns to prove it. Summertime allows for a change of pace; we can break away for a long holiday weekend and assess our

Heads and Digital Expressions

ln the world of facial performances, there is sometimes a need to capture facial
expressions
for blend-shapes in conjunction with mocap or other forms of facial performance.
We are now looking at a faster moving market of projects, budgets and quality. As we sweep the market for better solutions to give you the above objectives we are also keeping in mind that it needs to
be mobile. As much as we would like everyone to come to our studio, it is not always possible due to time constraints of talent, wardrobe and makeup, director needs and just plain cost of moving talent around.
The solution is to pack up our system and come to you. Our system is ready to shoot when the talent is ready or available with minimum usage of their time. The clean-up of all these scans did not go away, especially for the quality needed, however we working on those solutions as well. It is an expensive and demanding service, but it needs to be done and with the changing technologies constantly turning our heads to see the newest thing out there, you need to be wary of the deliverable and the quality needed.
As the Photogrammetry is a leading tech that gives a lot of advantages, it is not the only tech we use as it is not easy to take to sets for just a few body models. However, our head unit is and we have put our specific requests into the maker for just this reason.
Look at the quality and consider it for your next project,
at our house
or yours.
In between our projects we continue to test and to find better and quicker ways to set up and to use this system. If you are doing a lot of characters all of the time the old way, this may save you lots of time and labor, resulting in a much faster turn-around.

There are several ways to build bigger and better 3D
assets for your project, depending upon how much time and money you have allotted for 3D assets.
For example, you could have a 3D modeler just model your assets from sketches, and depending on his / her experience you would have your
3D model in days or weeks.

Alternatively, you could buy a similar asset online, and then modify it to make it unique for your project. This might be a quick solution, depending upon the level of finish and detail of the purchased asset. This may work out fine; in fact, you may be using this strategy now.

Lastly, you could 3D scan your model with
structured light
to get an exact digital replica. Similarly, you can use photogrammetry to build an exact 3D replica using DSLR cameras and high-resolution photography. If you are building a 3D model of a structure or an environment you can utilize a drone to cover all of the angles; however this does take great skill and patience to get it right.

Virtual Reality has gained its legs in the last 9 months as PSVR dominated the market, leaving The HTC Vive and Occulus Rift with a much smaller base (2-4x smaller). That said, PSVR is still a very small blip on the radar.
It would seem the nature of the fully encompassing headsets are ultimately not user-friendly enough for
Virtual Reality to catch on like wildfire at the moment.
Into the room walks Augmented Reality, which is mostly on smart phones, and lets you enhance your perception of reality such as Pokemon Go, where you travel in the real world to locations which will spawn monsters for you to fight and collect. To make this even more impressive we look to the future technology called Mixed Reality.
The end goal appears to be Mixed Reality as the main technology for media experiences. Mixed Reality is about interacting in the real world but with
holographic 3D assets superimposed by transparent lenses. Considering Virtual Reality still has a relatively small footprint, we're seemingly years away from Mixed Reality going mainstream.
For the time being,
Augmented Reality takes the cake. Virtual Reality experiences are great - but the replayability factor drops by the way side, meanwhile
Augmented Reality on mobile smart devices allow people to:
- Play the game anywhere
- Interact socially with people in your community and neighboring communities
- Maintain a digital avatar that represents you by it's name, clothing, and experience (executing game mechanics).
Augmented Reality appears to be able to bring together large groups of people from diverse backgrounds who are friendly and willing to cooperatively play a strategic game together in real time. Game communities will emerge from any sort of game on any platform, but the power of an Augmented Reality game along with people seeking a common goal has created a sort of living arcade in each of our cities.
