St. Sarkis Church would like to wish you  a wonderful THANKSGIVING And a Happy Holiday Season.

Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service
St. Sarkis Church Participates in an Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service

On Monday, November 21, The Marathon Jewish Community Center hosted an Interfaith Community Thanksgiving.  St. Sarkis Church was among the eight congregations represented.  Rabbi Gary Green the spiritual leader of the Marathon Jewish Community Center welcomed the clergy and congregation.  The service included recitations from the Old Testament and the singing of hymns and a Hebrew.  Rev. Lindsay Lunnum of Zion Episcopal Church, Rabbi Gary Green of the Marathon Jewish Community Center and Fr. Mark Bristol of Saint Anastasia Roman Catholic Church provided their respective interpretations of the scriptures that were recited.  Fr. Nareg Terterian made the call for the offering of gifts for the victims of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti.

This is the 2nd year that St. Sarkis church participates in this Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. This is a great way to begin the holiday season praying with people of all faiths and learning about different religious traditions.  Our differences -- spiritual or cultural -- should unite and not divide us.  Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!
Ladies Guild and ARS Erebouni Chapter Food Festival

The Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church and the ARS Erebouni Chapter worked very hard in preparing a wonderful spread of delicious Armenian delicacies sold in the Main Hall of the church. Sales began on Saturday, November 19th and continued with a lunch on Sunday, after church services.  Tables held traditional homemade delicacies and some Mediterranean dishes such as Yalanchi, Manti, Kofte, Lahmajun, Buereg, Khataif, Falafel, Chicken Wraps, Hummus, Tabouleh, Eech and much more. Some members enjoyed the food at the hall and some took it home.

In memory of Dr. Carlo Bayrakdarian's beloved mother Mrs. LALIG BAYRAKDARIAN, the Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church prepared a memorial Halva that was blessed by His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General and Fr. Nareg Terterian. Dr. Bayrakdarian gave a beautiful biography of his late mother in Armenian and his daughter read
the English version. At the end, Dr. Aurora Dogaru Bayrakdarian expressed her heartfelt thoughts about her beloved mother in law.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (1.1-10)
Paul, Silas and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you.
We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia-your faith in God has become known everywhere.
Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead-Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (12.13-31)
Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?" Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
PRESENTATION OF THE HOLY MOTHER TO THE TEMPLE
On Monday, November 21, the Armenian Church observes the Feast of the Presentation of the Holy Mother to the Temple (Undzayoum Sourp Asdvadzadzini), one of the eight feast days devoted to Mary in the Armenian Liturgical Calendar. The doctrine of the Holy Mother as "Mother-of-God" (Asdvadzamayr) and Bearer-of-God," (Asdvadzadzin) was established in the fifth century at the Holy Ecumenical Council of Ephesus.

This Feast commemorates the presentation of the Holy Virgin to the temple at the age of three. It is always observed on November 21. She remained in the house of God for twelve years, where she studied with scholars, which was unheard of for a female child, until the age of fifteen when she returned to the care of her parents, Joachim and Anna.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
This Sunday, November 27, is the first Sunday of Advent (from the Latin adventus, meaning "coming"). Advent is a season of penitence, anticipation and preparation. Advent serves as a reminder of the original anticipation of the birth of Christ, as well as the waiting of Christians for Christ's return. Ideally, it should be a time of quiet reflection and meditation. In modern times the period leading to Christmas is far from calm, and is more accurately described as frenetic. It is a good time to pause and reflect on the proper observance of the birth of our Lord and Savior.
In the true spirit of Christmas remember that this time of the year, although filled with joy for most, can be lonely and sad for many people. Reach out to an elderly person living alone, someone who is ill, or someone who is mourning the recent loss of a loved one.
