The inside scoop on all Sixteenth Street news and events!

For over 15 years, Spanish teacher, Sara Brand, from Whitnall High School has organized a visit with her students to Sixteenth Street for a cultural/language exchange, as well as to donate items to our Stork's Nest/Parenting Resource Center for patients. December 14, Sara and her 53 students came to our Chavez site to continue this tradition. They met with patients who shared about their cultures and how each one celebrates the holidays. The students love it because not only do they get to form relationships and learn about new cultures, they practice their Spanish asking questions and sharing their own experiences. The fun day is always ended with Spanish Christmas carols sung by the students, as a parting entertainment and thank you for the families.

A huge thank you to all the Whitnall students for sharing their time and for their generous contributions!
Holiday giving tree

The holidays can be a hard time for families in need. Every year
Sixteenth Street staff, along with their families and friends, come  together to purchase gifts for families in various departments of the clinic; social services, parenting resource center, behavioral health, HIV services and WIC participants. It is a wonderful experience seeing the happiness on the faces of the recipients and a tradition we hold near and dear to our hearts.

It is our pleasure and honor to serve the wonderful people and community we do.

Thank you to all our patients, clients and participants - we greatly appreciate you.

"Trans-forming" Our Community

Sixteenth Street's HIV Department celebrated their annual "Trans-forming" Our Community, Transgender Gala, this month. The gala was started four years ago to help bring awareness and celebrate the Transgender community in Milwaukee. In conjunction with Transgender Awareness Month and World AIDS Day, this event is organized to help remember Transgender people who have lost their lives to violence and HIV/AIDS, to educate the community and have a safe space where Transgender people can come together to celebrate each other.

The event consisted of dinner, dancing, music, a short program and the unveiling of the new 2016-2017 Transgender Calendar.
Sixteenth Street in the News

We all know that the holidays means parties, food and a lot of temptation! If you are watching what you eat for any number of reasons, it can be a scary time. It's quite the challenge to get through without overeating, then feeling guilty about it. What if we switch gears? What if we take this time to really enjoy our food? Now, this doesn't mean eat anything and everything we see or want. It means being mindful about what we eat. Thinking about our food, being present while we eat it and really enjoying the experience.

Think about why you like what you're eating. It's ok to eat some of your favorite foods. But if you're going to do that, really think about it - don't just gobble it down. Does the cookie bring back good memories? Do you love the flavor? Or the texture? Ponder what you like about that food while you are eating it, to really enjoy and be present in the experience...
