From the President....

Last month's news about the Ajman Project in the UAE is very significant. This is the largest ever ATN project proposed as a retrofit to an entire city. The reporting has been a bit confusing since three different cost numbers have been announced. Here is the scoop:

The system cost is US$ 723 M. The total project cost, including the system cost is US$ 882 M. Some reporters incorrectly added these two numbers together.

Note that the total length of guideway is 120 kilometer (75 miles). Thus the system cost is US$  6 M per kilometer or US$ 10 M per mile. These are very competitive cost numbers. However, it must be pointed out that the project includes elevated PRT and at-grade GRT and the relative proportions of the two are unknown.

As always, enjoy reading!

Best regards,
Peter Muller, P.E., ATRA President

An Environmentally Responsible Solution That Will Change The Face of Transportation

"The time has come for a replacement to the automobile. Elevated rail makes the most sense for both city and forest, so the question remains, what format is the best? This is the question that I have asked myself for more than a decade. Over this time I have designed and discarded numerous options. The Railplane is the distillation of this effort.
