Eclipse Glasses for Monday, August 21st
Remember, there is no school on Monday, August 21st so that all families can view the Total Solar Eclipse that is occurring that afternoon. Walker Hospitality Group has generously donated protective eclipse glasses for all Summit students & employees. Classroom teachers will be handing out those glasses this week to students.

Mrs. Anderson Celebrates 40 Years of Teaching
The first day of school is always filled with celebration, but for Mrs. Julie Anderson, Summit's 4th Grade teacher, this year is a little something more to celebrate. The 2017-2018 school year marks Mrs. Anderson's 40th year teaching and her 12th year at The Summit. "She's an incredible human being," said sophomore Evan Mason of Mrs. Anderson. "My favorite memory is when she would come before school to math club... I know math has a stigma but she made math fun. She'd bring us donuts and chocolate milk and all the kids loved it. She got kids to come early to school and do math. Only Mrs. Anderson could do that." When she's not in the classroom, Mrs. Anderson enjoys traveling, yoga, reading, gardening, and bee keeping, just to name a few of her hobbies.

Stay Connected: Text Messaging at The Summit Prep
We use text messaging to communicate important information to families (such as school closings or important event reminders). To join our text group text "Raven" to 25827. You will receive an automated message back confirming your text. Standard texting and messaging rates may apply. Some may have a problem receiving these text messages because the settings on their phone currently "Block Short Code". This occurs usually because a person has recently changed numbers or service providers. To fix this, you will need to change this setting in your phone. If you don't know how to do this please contact your cell phone provider.

Volunteer Training Sessions
Parental involvement is encouraged and necessary for all of The Summit's school-wide functions and activities to be successful. Each family is asked to
volunteer for a minimum of four of the annual activities/events per school year.
Grandparents and other close family members are welcome to
volunteer
as well.
Everyone who wishes to
volunteer must complete
volunteer
training every two years. This
training typically lasts 30 minutes and is conducted by our Guidance Counselor, Becky Breckner.

Speech & Language at The Summit Prep
This school year, The Summit will once again coordinate with
TheraCare Speech Therapy for the Ozarks
to provide (at no cost) initial screening of students for possible speech and language difficulties, enabling us to provide the best possible academic learning environment. Screenings will be held with all new students in Beginners through 5th grade, with those recommended for a re-screen, and as recommended by a classroom teacher or per parent request. Look for information from your classroom teacher regarding consent forms and participation.

Run for The Summit: Superhero Run on Saturday, September 16th
Have you signed up for the Superhero Run yet?! Make sure you sign your whole family up to run or walk the 5K or 1 Mile Fun Run, because then you'll be sure to get this super cool Summit Superhero shirt! These shirts are considered Summit Spirit Wear and can be worn on Fridays with jeans in lieu of Summit uniforms.
This Run directly supports the SPO (Summit Parent Organization) and also our Summit Teachers' Professional Development Fund! Sign up the entire family, and tell your friends!

STEAM & Makerspace Supplies
We are in the process of increasing supplies to support "STEAM" education and "Makerspace" activities for next school year. STEAM is an educational approach that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics to guide student inquiry and learning. "
Makerspace
" refers to an area that allows for creativity and innovation as students engage in learning experiences. The use of "Makerspaces" often aligns with an integrated STEAM approach, extending this approach to learning by providing students with the freedom to design, engineer, create, build, tinker, and collaborate.
We are excited to expand these offerings to Summit students through means of a mobile STEAM and "Makerspace" closet. Use of shared supplies will provide students Beginners through High School with access to STEAM and Makerspace materials. To do this, we need your help stocking the closet with needed items. Many of the supplies we are looking to collect include basic craft or household items. If you have an opportunity to look around your house, or would be willing to make a small donation, we will be collecting items in a donation bin located in the lobby at the beginning of the school year. Please don't feel that you need to purchase any of these items, but we'd appreciate it if you could keep us in mind as you're cleaning up around the house.
