CONDOLENCES TO VICTIMS OF EARTHQUAKE IN ITALY
Our thoughts and prayers are with the large number of people in central Italy who experienced the recent earthquake that resulted in loss of life, many injured survivors, and the destruction of homes in the ancient picturesque area which at this time of the year is filled with vacationers and tourists. The town of Amatrice (known as the town of the hundred churches), and villages of Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto, are nearly totally destroyed. Our heartfelt condolences to the many people who lost family members and friends, as well as their homes. May the compassion and love of the Almighty comfort them all.

AND FLOODING IN LOUISIANA. . .
We also keep in our prayers the people in the flooded areas of Louisiana. Many have lost every possession they ever owned; but mindful of their survival, they are determined to rebuild their lives anew.

Please be generous donors to charities that help the people caught up in these natural disasters.

This Sunday's Service
Rev. Fr. Zareh Sarkissian, a member of the brotherhood of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia who is currently in the US to continue his education, will be celebrating the Divine Liturgy, and delivering the homily at St. Sarkis Church on Sunday, August 28.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS (1.1-11)
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
To the church of God in Corinth, together with all the saints throughout Achaia:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK (4.35-41)
That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.

A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"

They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
Feast Of The Discovery Of The Belt Of The Theotokos
This Sunday, August 28, the second Sunday after the Assumption, is the Feast of the Discovery of the Belt of the Theotokos. Because there are no relics of the Holy Mother's earthly body (she was assumed into Heaven), her personal belongings became the object of devotion. During the time of the early Church, when Christians were persecuted, her possessions were kept hidden and secret. Her belt was the first item to be discovered in Jerusalem in the fifth century. This discovery is the basis for one of the eight feast days in the Armenian liturgical calendar devoted to the Holy Mother. The feast days dedicated to the Holy Mother are: Her Nativity, Her Presentation to the Temple, Annunciation, Conception of Mary, Purification, Assumption, Discovery of her Belt, and Discovery of her Box.

Holy Prophets Ezekiel, Ezra And Zechariah
Next Tuesday, August 30, the Armenian Church commemorates the Holy Prophets Ezekiel, Ezra, and Zechariah, father of John the Baptist. Ezekiel prophesied for about 28 years. The Book of Ezekiel, composed of 48 chapters, is ranked third among the great prophets. It is full of rich imagery, prophetic visions, and allegories.  Ezra was a learned and pious priest in Babylon.  The Book of Ezra describes the return to Zion following the Babylonian captivity. Zechariah, is the father of John the Baptist. He was married to Elizabeth, and John was born to them in their old age. The promise of a son was conveyed to Zechariah by an angel.

St. John The Forerunner And Job The Righteous
Next Thursday, September 1, the Armenian Church commemorates St. John the Forerunner and Job the Righteous. St. John the Forerunner, also known as John the Baptist (Hovhaness Mkrtich), is an important figure in the Gospels. He is recognized as the "forerunner" (Karapet) to the Messiah. He lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea. At the age of 30 he began to preach against the evils of the times and called for penance and baptism because "the kingdom of heaven is close at hand."
Job is a good and righteous person who experiences and endures catastrophe after catastrophe. The phrase "the patience of Job" has entered the English lexicon as a popular cliché. The Book of Job is one of the five books classified as the "poetical books" of the Bible. The central theme is the mystery of suffering. Ultimately, Job is rewarded because "the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning," and "After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children, and his children's children, four generations. And Job died, old and full of days." (Job, chapter 42).

Gregorian Play
On August 22nd, several community members attended the opening of the play Gregorian and met with playwright Matthew Greene after the show. Gregorian portrays one family's journey during the Armenian Genocide and continuing through four generations. The play was powerful in its message and it would be an extremely positive gesture for all Armenians to support it by attending. The play is running August 18th - September 2nd at The Soho Repertory Theatre, located at 46 Walker Street in Manhattan.
