News From St. Sarkis Church

 Labor Day

Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. However, Labor Day recognizes the significance of work in creating a productive and healthy society.

For us Christians, work is the best way to manifest our faith. The firs t example of work from the Bible is of God in the accounts of creation: "God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good." (Genesis 1.31). Therefore we are called to follow the biblical example of creativity and excellence in wo rk.

Let us all pray with the words of the Armenian Prayer; " Hear us oh God our Savior, incline your ears to our supplications so that the labors of your servants may not be in vain. Rather count our works as deeds of righteousness and fruit of piety". Amen.

Dinner, Movie and Campfire For The Youth

The St. Sarkis Church Youth Club started their season with their first ever Movie and Campfire Night on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Almost 40 youths from ages 10-21 gathered together for an enjoyable night around the campfire. The night started off with dinner and introductions, and promptly transitioned outside to our movie, Facing the Giants. The movie depicted a football coach and his teams' struggles to improve their lives and grow as a group with the help of God. After the movie ended, we all gathered around the campfire with Der Nareg to discuss the role God plays in our lives, and how He helps us overcome our challenges. Everyone had fun making s'mores and talking to their friends for the rest of the night. Thank you to everyone who donated their time, food and helped make this night a huge success!! May the upcoming year be just as successful!!

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS (7.4-13)
I have great confidence in you; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.
For when we came into Macedonia, this body of ours had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn-conflicts on the outside, fears within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.
Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it-I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while- yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong or of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. By all this we are encouraged.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK (7.31-37)
Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man.
After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Be opened!" ). At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.
Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done everything well," they said. "He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
The 318 Fathers Of The Holy Council Of Nicaea
This Saturday, September 3, the Armenian Church commemorates the First Ecumenical Council held in Nicaea in Asia Minor in the year 325, and the 318 Church Fathers who attended. The Council was convened by Emperor Constantine. The Armenian Church participated in this Council and contributed toward the victory of orthodoxy. Aristakes, son of Gregory the Illuminator, represented the Armenian Church. The Council is mentioned in the writings of Moses of Khoren and Agathangelos. In later centuries and in all their doctrinal writings, the Fathers of the Armenian Church referred to the Council of Nicaea with veneration and the Nicene Creed (Havatamk) was incorporated into the Armenian Liturgy. The Council condemned Arianism that denied the full divinity of Christ, and proclaimed that the orthodox position is the belief in "one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of God and Father, Only Begotten, of the substance of the Father. God from God, light from light, true God, begotten and not made," (from the Nicene Creed recited during the Armenian Divine Liturgy).

Paregentan Of The Fast Of Exaltation
This Sunday, September 4, is the Paregentan of the Fast leading to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Khachveratz), which is next Sunday. Because the Exaltation is a Tabernacle Feast, it is preceded by a week (Monday to Friday) of fasting.

Feast Of The Nativity Of The Holy Mother
This Saturday, September 3, is the Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God. The birth of Mary is not recorded in the Bible. The account of this event comes to us from other writings that are not part of the New Testament. According to tradition, Joachim and Anna were faithful and pious, waiting for the promised Messiah. They were elderly and childless. They prayed to God for a child and were blessed with a daughter they named Mary, who would become the Mother of the Messiah.

Gregorian Play
On August 22nd, several community members attended the opening of the play Gregorian and met with playwright Matthew Greene after the show. Gregorian portrays one family's journey during the Armenian Genocide and continuing through four generations. The play was powerful in its message and it would be an extremely positive gesture for all Armenians to support it by attending. The play is running August 18th - September 2nd at The Soho Repertory Theatre, located at 46 Walker Street in Manhattan.
