NYCOMEC Hosts Deans Strategic Planning Session

As part of NYCOMEC's ongoing strategic planning efforts, a Deans Retreat was held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at the de Seversky Mansion, NYIT-Old Westbury Campus. The Retreat provided an opportunity for the leadership of NYCOMEC's member Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine to discuss what influences the ACGME Single Accreditation System may have on medical education and to  develop strategies to maximize opportunities and mitigate potentially negative consequences. 
Faculty Development Program: Trainee Preparation for Specialty Board Exams

On December 6, 2016, NYCOMEC hosted a faculty development program titled Training Your Trainees To Be Successful On Their Specialty Board Examinations, presented by William Blazey, D.O., Associate Professor & Assistant Dean, Preclinical Education, NYITCOM-Old Westbury Campus. In his presentation, Dr. Blazey shared important tips that Program Directors can use to assist trainees in successfully preparing for their exams. This webinar pr ovides a hands-on approach on how to conduct a needs assessment for developing a resident well-being plan. This allows designated institutional officials, program directors, and program coordinators to identify stressors and supports, along with curricular innovations, coaching strategies, and faculty development activities to use in the clinical learning environment. ACGME launches new suicide prevention initiative for medical residents and fellows

The ACGME, in collaboration with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and Mayo Clinic, has launched an initiative to prevent physician and medical trainee suicides. The initiative, which was developed in response to the increasing rates of stress, depression and fatigue that are fueling concern about physician well-being, introduces a library of educational resources, including: 
  • A four-minute video that advises medical students, residents and fellows on how to support each other, express concern to peers, and encourage help-seeking behavior;
  • A comprehensive guide to help graduate training programs respond to a resident death by suicide;
  • Additional information and access to support.

Dr. Leder: One to Watch in Education in LIBN

Adena Leder, D.O., Assistant Professor, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, NYITCOM, is included in a feature section called "Ones to Watch: Education" in   Long Island Business News. Dr. Leder is recognized in her role as director of NYIT's Parkinson's Disease Treatment Center, which provides medical care along with physical, occupational and speech therapy services. Medical Students at the TouroCOM Middletown Campus Are Engaging Their Artistic Side

Launched through a collaborative effort by OMS I and OMS II students, the Creative Arts in Medicine club provides students at TouroCOM Middletown with an artistic outlet and a much-needed respite from the intense academic pursuits required of medical students. To read more please click here.

Students from NYITCOM spread holiday cheer throughout the Old Westbury Campus by singing Christmas carols and other holiday-spirited songs to fellow students and faculty.
