Deadline Extended
The deadline to apply for SLA Continuing Education and Anniversary Grants for members has been extended to August 31.

A new $1,500 Anniversary Conference Grant is available to 
help fund an eligible individual  to attend a Canadian conference held before May 2018, and share their experience with the broader library community. (e.g OLA Superconference in January 2018). 
 
SLA also strives to provide and support relevant educational opportunities for its members. There are three categories of grants available. 

Congratulations Saskatoon Public Library
The Saskatoon Public Library has won the prestigious American Library Association (ALA) 2017 John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award  for its Better Than Ever campaign.  Details can found online.

Culture Days are Coming!
Culture Days, September 29 and 30 and October 1, aims to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. SLA has approved 10 grants to libraries that plan and execute special programming for Culture Days. 
 
Celebrate!
The Gabriel Dumont Institute and Grow Solutions invite everyone to the Charette River Lot for a musical celebration of the essential place of Métis people in Canada's history, culture and spirit on August  19. 
 
The event is funded by  the Community Fund for Canada's 150th. 
Registration is limited to 40 adults, and a $20 donation is requested, unless you come by horse or canoe. Children and Elders are precious and enter free. To register, please contact Ryan at Gabriel Dumont Institute at 306 934 4941 or email.
  
York University to Appeal Decision 
The Federal Court of Canada has issued its decision in the first phase of the lawsuit launced by Access Copyright against York University in 2013. T wo questions were at issue: whether the Interim Tariff issued by the Copyright Board of Canada is mandatory and enforceable and whether York's fair dealing guidelines were "fair". The Court found in favour of Access Copyright and against York University on both these issues and York University has decided to appeal. Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) Workshop
The Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists  ( SCAA ) will host a workshop on the Care and Handling of Photographic Materials by Greg Hill from the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI). The workshop will be held September  19-20 at the Humboldt Uniplex. The deadline for registration is August 27.
 
Newcomers Toolkit
Canada is dedicated to the well-being and integration of all newcomers.
Immigrants have always played a significant role in the development of our country's identity and continue to do so.
 
But settling in a new country can be challenging for many immigrants, so Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has developed a toolkit that libraries and municipalities can use to inform newcomers of the free services available to help them get settled.  
Download posters, web banners, social media posts, a video and email messages that can be used to raise awareness of the supports available.
 
Research Project
Laura Madokoro, an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Classical Studies at McGill University, is seeking help for a new history research project.
 
She is researching the history of sanctuary in Canada from the 1800s to the present. Her research includes both religious and secular acts of sanctuary; the tradition of protection offered by Judeo-Christian churches and other religious institutions, as well as protection offered by ethnic and local communities in the face of state efforts to arrest, prosecute or deport individuals for various reasons.
 
Ms. Madokoro is asking for help to find  any sanctuary offers that might be capture d in archival / museum / library holdings and would appreciate guidance on searching these holdings. As much of that information is in the memories of people who live and work in the communities where sanctuary once took place, she is also asking for help in tracking down local histories and lore.

Access 2017 Library Technology Conference  
The Saskatchewan Library Association will host its Access 2017 Library Technology Conference in Saskatoon on September 27-29 2017. The keynote speakers will be Dr. Kimberly Christen, the Director of the Digital Technology and Culture Program and the co-Director of the Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation at Washington State University and Nora Young, author and CBC broadcaster.
