Region 3
Red Bluff AHA is holding their first Winter Horse Show ODS on Jan. 21-Jan 22, 2017. It is a Region 3 and Region 4 Qualifier. This is a big date change for the club and the class list has been revamped. Fun All-Breed classes have been added. Ranch Riding is included. In case someone wants a class not listed, TBAs are available with only the class fee charged. Stall fees are lowered. The hopes are to bring in local people in the All Breed classes so the Arabian horse breed can be exposed to more and new people. The show is located at the Rolling Hills Equestrian Facility is in Corning, California. The arenas have sandy loam footing. With many amenities such as golf course, fly fishing, and restaurants in the casino, it is a great site. This year we are sending out show information by e-mail and e-blasts. The judges are Jim Hitt, Russ Taylor, Dani Cercek and Ashley Toye.

Wine Country Arabian Horse Association has wrapped up a very productive year with our Holiday Party. Everyone had a great time. We paid tribute to a very special lady and friend, Sandy Markoff, for her contributions to the Arabian horse and our club. Was very well deserved. Patti Belanger was awarded the AHA Club Level Volunteer of the Year for all her work with our youth members. Congratulations to both. Our Coat Drive collected over 150 Coats to help the homeless in Sonoma County. It was a very good feeling as a group to help with this worthy cause. We have a lot planned for 2017. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  www.winecountryarabians.com

Region 3 congratulates the new AHA President, Nancy Harvey. Her years of dedication and hard work with AHA gives her great expertise in this position. Looking to her success as President.

Region 3 also congratulates Deb Johnson as the AHA Vice President. We all know Deb through her work with the AHA on Equitation and Marketing Development and Promotion just to mention a couple of her committees.  Her judging experiences have been wide spread. We also note that her Riding Academy in Reno, Nevada, gave 3,996 riding lessons last year. Currently serving as Region 3 Secretary, she participates at National, Regional, and local levels. Her interest in horses began at age 5 and Deborah has ridden to many National and Regional Championships. Her mother, Sue, must be looking down on Deb and yelling, "Go Deb, go!"

Region 3 congratulates Sharon Richards on receiving the AHA National Volunteer award.
She has served her club, Region 3, U.S. Nationals and Youth Nationals. At Youth Nationals Sharon has been a Commissioner for over 20 years. Her duties at Youth include doing the scheduling. I have watched how detailed she becomes as she works the three arenas to avoid conflicts. She is truly the Queen of Schedules. Sharon worked at U.S. Nationals for 17 years. At the Regional level for Region 3, she is fully in charge as Show Secretary and has done this for Region 3 since its inception. Sharon devotes herself to being the Secretary of many California shows and other California Regions. At the local level, she has been Secretary for local All-Breed shows and qualifying shows. At her ranch, she has bred Arabian and Half-Arabian with much success. Her knowledge and expertise makes her the go-to person with questions and problems. She has a great sense of humor and whatever the show theme is, she will dress up, decorate and celebrate.  Sharon has deserved this award many times over. Her patience and helpfulness is exemplary in times of stress. Region 3 thanks her for her dedication and looks forward to many more years of her efforts in helping in all areas.

Region 3 also congratulates Cheryl Black Hansen for her Regional Volunteer Award. Cheryl currently serves as AHA Chair of Convention Planning Committee. As she reports to convention each year, her reviewing of the surveys and attention to detail are evident. Before becoming Chair, she had served on the committee since the 1970s. Cheryl has expertise as a show steward and has stewarded at shows all over the country. Having worked with her, I have seen her calmness and expertise resolve various show problems. She is a qualified scorer and has been scorer at U.S. Nationals. She also scribes at many shows. Her club's All-Breed show, which she manages, is extremely successful. This One Day show has as many as 159 horses. Cheryl is an asset in all these positions and Region 3 congratulates her with this award.

Region 3 also congratulates Regional Volunteer Award winner, Rita Mason. Rita has been invaluable in fostering Arabian Sport Horse in Region 3. She manages the Sport Horse show on the Regional and the club level. She is an avid and successful exhibitor. She is willing to shoulder the responsibilities that would be daunting to most. Her cheerful demeanor and spirit of camaraderie makes her deserving of this award.

We congratulate and thank these individuals for all their hard work. We hope that all clubs participate in the AHA Volunteer Program and award a member this honor. A pat on the back puts a smile on a volunteers face.

Region 5
Region 5 is proud to host the Second Annual Northwest EquestFest and Year End Awards Banquet.  The date is Saturday, January 7, 2017, at the Tacoma Convention Center.  This year's event is going to be bigger and better than last years, so spread the word to your friends, family and other horse enthusiasts. Along with lecturers and vendors, we will be holding a large silent auction benefiting the Arabian Horseman's Distress Fund, Little Bit Riding Therapy and the Region 5 Youth. At the Year End Awards Banquet we will be having a Dessert Dash/Cake Auction with proceeds going to the Arabian Horseman's Distress Fund  specifically Mike Whelihan.

Region 8
I am honored (Mark Goff) to be the new Region 8 Director. I am looking to serving Region 8 and
AHA on the Board of Directors.  I know 2017 will be an exciting year.

I want to first congratulate the Colorado Arabian Horse Club for being named Club of the Year by AHA for 2016.  This is the second time this dedicated club has won the award. President Gerald Martinez and all of the club's members hard work has certainly paid off.

Region 8 is changing the long standing Burr Betts Scholarship Program. There will now be four scholarships offered at $1,000.00 each, these will be open to Region 8 students either coming out of high school or continuing college students. Region 8 Past Director, Rusty Cook, will chair this committee. For more information on the Burr Betts Scholarship Program please contact Rusty Cook at [email protected] .  Information and applications will be on the Region website, aharegion8.org.

We are very excited about our new "Thunder for Humanity" project.  AHA Market Development and Promotion has initiated a program to promote the Arabian horse in communities through various fund raising activities around the country and Region 8 was one of the first to jump on board. We have donated $5,000 to the purchase of a statue and formed a committee with Vice Director Jim Porcher; Chair Kathy Scott, Grace Rushing; and Lisa Blackstone as the Marketing Development and Promotion representative to get the ball rolling.  Our goal is to honor Sharon Magness Blake for her years of sponsorship of the Denver Broncos mascot, Thunder, and Ann Judge at the Bronco games.

Please feel free to contact me with comments or questions at   [email protected]  or through the Region 8 website.

I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2017!

Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada won the AHA Club Excellence Award for the Membership Retention/Recruitment category at the 2016 AHA Convention. This was the club's second year entering and recorded a second win, which is amazing for such a small Canadian club. Like many clubs, AHAEC's membership numbers had decreased over the recent years, however with a new emphasis on membership communication and membership benefits, the club's membership rooster increased by over 12% in the past year! Members had an exciting year celebrating the club's 60th Anniversary with a new directory and many handouts to the members created specifically for the anniversary, plus a revised monthly e-newsletter available to members and hard copies available at public events through the club's promotion booth. Winning this AHA Award capped a truly memorable year for AHAEC!

ARABIANS PROVIDE A SPECTACULAR SHOW AT THE ROYAL IN TORONTO, CANADA

Ten prolific Arabian show horses, many of them National Champions, came to The Royal, annually held in Toronto during November, to compete for $10,000 in the Country English Pleasure classes. Exhibitors from Ontario, Minnesota, Michigan, New York and Connecticut showed to standing-room only crowds on both nights. This was the second year The Royal had invited the Arabian horse to participate in the evening session of its acclaimed Royal Horse Show, and the Arabian horses showed they belonged among the elite equine competitors! In 2015, the Arabian horses competed in the Native Costume Invitational Challenge classes at The Royal, and the 2016 show saw a 100% increase in the number of exhibitors vying for top prize money and recognition as a Royal champion! Local club, Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada, had a promotion booth at the "Arabian Aisle" in the stabling area, which saw a great number of people come by with many having the opportunity to touch the horses and walk away with Arabian horse information. Having such great Arabian horse breed ambassadors at The Royal for the past couple of years has proven to be a win-win for the breed and a great positive for all! Thanks to all the 2016 exhibitors and sponsors for making The Royal a wonderful Arabian horse experience for so many!

AHAEC'S 61st AGM
January 14, 2017, promises to be a day well spent at the club's Annual General Meeting, featuring meetings throughout the day, plus a silent auction to raise necessary funds for the club and a great evening of food, fun and honouring the club's annual award winners. Members compete at the many shows, accumulating points in a wide variety of classes, with the high point winners being acknowledged during the banquet. Also, scheduled to receive recognition, are the club's AHA Volunteer Service Award winners Danielle Donald and Jane Whitwell for the club level and Cheryl Smith-Ehrlick and Jill Barton will receive their regional level awards. For the second year in a row the club will induct members into its Hall of Fame which acknowledges the service of many of its club members throughout the decades. Being included in the Hall of Fame is truly an honour and inspiration to the club. The AGM is great day to gather with all Arabian horse enthusiasts and to plan future club events. Come join us at the Brant Park Best Western in Brantford, Ontario! Banquet tickets available at $45 for adults and $25 for children. For more information contact Alice Draper,
