First Tesla Solar Roof Systems Installed on Employee Homes
It's been quite a week for Tesla. The  first 30 Model 3 electric cars were delivered to their new owners and there was an announcement about the installation of the first Tesla Solar Roof systems. There is a connection between the two events. In both cases, the first customers will be Tesla employees. That way, the company hopes to work out any kinks in the manufacturing process before either product gets into the hands of regular customers. More

Here's How Solar Power Will Handle the Eclipse
The total solar eclipse on Monday, the first to arch the U.S. coast-to-coast in 99 years, will be a test of how well the country's grid will handle an unprecedented swing in solar-power production. Operators will have to balance a speedy loss of large loads of solar energy as well as the whiplash of that energy coming back to the grid as the eclipse runs its course. Ikea Now Sells Solar Panels and Batteries in the UK
Ikea is now offering solar panels and home batteries to its customers in the UK. The Scandinavian furniture chain is partnering with solar firm Solarcentury for the venture, with prices for solar battery storage starting at £3,000 (about $3,970 USD). The home batteries are designed to work with existing solar panels, or as part of a new combined home solar panel / battery storage system that Ikea is selling. Ikea says an average UK home with solar panels will typically consume around 40 percent of the solar electricity it generates. More

Royal Dutch Shell Has a New Mindset
In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Ben Van Beurden, the CEO of Royal Dutch Shell, said his company had changed its mindset to a "lower forever" price of oil. Perhaps the most significant thing about his new position is that it refers to a change in "mindset," rather than mere adoption of a new business plan. Van Beurden clearly believes that Shell has to be prepared for a depressed price of oil, and consequently of the oil industry, from which it never recovers. This is a complicated issue involving a wide range of pressures from competing technologies. One competitor for oil is natural gas, in which Shell has long had its position. More
