A welcome from the HLC
As we begin a new semester here in the Honors College, the Honors Leadership Council wishes to send out a word of welcome.
This student group represents your interests in community discussions, advises the dean on matters impacting students and helps set the trajectory of student leadership initiatives for the academic year.
It consists of an Executive Board which is made up of a member from each undergraduate disciplinary college at Purdue and a general council of representatives from each of the other honors leadership groups or specific populations within the Honors College community.
The HLC Executive Board holds weekly office hours and "Coffee with the Council" sessions throughout the year. Come chat about your honors community, leadership positions and information related to your disciplinary college. HLC office hours are in the study nook off the side entrances to Honors Hall.

Join fellow Boilermakers in viewing the 2017 solar eclipse
Purdue Astronomy Club is hosting an event for the solar eclipse occurring on Aug. 21, 2017. Solar eclipse glasses will be passed out to students before the event and during the event at the south end of Purdue Memorial Mall.
A telescope with a solar filter will also be set up for those without eclipse glasses.
If the weather does not permit viewing the eclipse outside, STEW 314 will be reserved and a live stream video will be shown and glasses will still be passed out. Students can learn about safe viewing practices and what an eclipse is. Please join us on Purdue Memorial Mall for this special event!

Society of Arts and Letters looking for members
You're invited to e
xpand your creative horizons by meeting other Honors College students with a passion for arts and literature.
The society (SAL) will meet regularly with some meetings dedicated to discussion of work by an established writer or artist and others dedicated to discussion of original work by SAL members.
At our inaugural meeting we will focus on establishing a steering committee consisting of those interested in participating, establishing meeting times for the semester and confirming the structure and purpose of future society meetings.
Please email Dr. Adam Watkins (
aewatkin@purdue.edu) if you are interested in becoming a member but cannot attend.

UPRISE looking for toy-testers, reviewers for Engineering Gift Guide
Purdue's Engineering Gift Guide was created in 2014 with the goal to help inform parents, educators and other gift givers about which toys, games, books and apps promote engineering thinking and/or design. Each year companies and publishers submit hundreds of products to be reviewed with the hopes of being included in our guide.
The program is looking for
a team of students interested in playing with/reading and reviewing toys, games, books and apps. Students must have a strong work ethic and writing ability. The job also requires students to attend on campus and community review events when their schedule allows.
Other skills/experience that would be beneficial but not required: engineering, graphic design, photography, videography, InDesign, worked with young children, studying in an engineering or STEM field, social media, editing

Get to know us:
Kristina Bross
Associate Dean of Research and Creative Endeavors
"My research took me to the Newberry Library in Chicago, the Huntington Library in Pasadena, California, the Bishopsgate and British Libraries in London, and our own Purdue Special Collections and Archives, where I found an original copy a book by William Lilly, a "judicial Astrologer" from the times when astrology was still considered a science," Bross said. "It was published in 1651 edition filled with margin notes made by a reader over 300 years ago."

Dr. Kristina Bross |
|
Bross, an associate professor of English and the Honors College's Associate Dean of Research and Creative Endeavors, plans to bring some of that scholarship into the "Science Fiction and Fantasy" class she is teaching in the English department this fall. Her students will be analyzing 20th and 21st century works and considering how the genres intersect with regionalism.
"Everything we read or watch is arguably 'Midwestern' in some way," Bross added. "I'm hoping to recruit an undergraduate research assistant to help construct and publish a website of Midwestern speculative fiction."
In her role with the Honors College, Bross helps guide students through the completion of their scholarly project. She wants to inspire students to reframe their thinking about what undergraduate research can be. While the term often brings visions of lab work, Bross says the pathways to research are broad. Whether you are a chemistry, communication, English or engineering major, she believes research is a doorway to explore a variety of topics in myriad ways. You could complete your scholarly project working with solar panel technology in a laboratory setting, or by completing an art installation on Memorial Mall. Students are limited only by their imaginations, she says.
