The Council on Aging of Buncombe County is getting 'geared up' for a unique, new, and exciting event coming to downtown Asheville on Saturday, September 23, 2017, the last
day of the annual Active Aging Week. Rappelling down 29 N. Market Street, a 100-foot (7 story) building to the cheers of friends and onlookers, ninety-two (92) individuals will be given the unique opportunity to go Over the Edge
for the Council on Aging of Buncombe County.

To secure a place in the rappel line, each participant must raise a minimum of $1,000. Participants create their own unique fundraising page, and then rally friends, family, and colleagues to "sponsor" their rappel. Costumes are encouraged, and you are sure to see some local celebrities making their way down.
Over The Edge is the perfect opportunity to have fun - and the only event of its kind in WNC. Earn your bragging rights and maybe even face your fear of heights.

"The Crowin' Hen" Opens in September at the Folk Art Center

"The Crowin' Hen" is a mountain comedy with mountain music written by Tom Godleski.

"A whistlin' girl, and a crowin' hen will never come to any good end," is an old mountain saying, that inspired Tom to write the play.
"The Crowin' Hen" made its world premier in May of 2015, at The Folk Art Center in Asheville. That first staging was very well attended and got rave reviews.

The Folk Art Center will also host the 2017 performances of the play as follows:

Friday September 8, 7:30 p.m.;
Saturday, September 9, 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, September 10, 2:30 p.m.
Tickets and additional information can be found at buncombeturnpike.com or text/call 828 778 9534

Dear OLLI Members,
As we hear about the crisis in Charlottesville, Virginia, this weekend, we recognize the ways that our history of racism continues to shape and challenge our fundamental values as a country. We hope that all OLLI members will commit themselves to making sure that our organization strives for a more diverse and inclusive community and that we debate and express complex ideas in respectful ways.

Please remember that registration for our Fall 2017 College for Seniors courses will continue until Thursday, August 17, noon.  We will have helpers at the Reuter Center every day during that time to help with the process.  Many thanks to the members of the College for Seniors curriculum committee for putting together such a varied and challenging schedule of courses.   Courses will begin on Monday, September 18. We will let you know as soon as we have more information about parking decals for the coming year.

Volunteers are the heart of our organization, and we appreciate the ways that our communication and marketing committee captures the stories of our OLLI members. We know you will enjoy John Hammond's story about Sherry Lubic, one of our excellent College for Seniors instructors and volunteers.

We feel fortunate to be able to participate in exciting activities on the UNC Asheville campus.  You have another chance to learn more about the Great Solar Eclipse of 2017 when UNC Asheville professor Judy Beck gives a talk on Tuesday, August 15, 7 p.m. in Humanities Lecture Hall.  We hope you will be able to attend the David Brooks lecture on September 12 in Kimmel Arena and the Farm-to-Table Dinner on the quad on September 14, 2017.

Please remember that the Reuter Center and the OLLI office will be closed on Friday, August 18 as we hold the Paths to Creative Retirement weekend.

With respect for all that you do to model creative retirement,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director
