August afo news
afo Leaders (from left to right): afo's incoming Executive Director Claire Blaylock, afo Vice President Stefanie Becker, afo President Rod Ashley, ED Search Committee Chair Anne Monnier
Meet the New Face of afo!

We are more than pleased to introduce you to afo’s new Executive Director, Claire Blaylock. As only the third leader in afo’s 35-year history, Claire will bring her deep interest in architecture and the built environment, her enthusiasm and expertise in nonprofit process and her love of community service to the job of taking afo into its next stage of the foundation’s development.

Claire has most recently served as Executive Director of Clackamas County Historical Society, where she has led both the Museum of the Oregon Territory and the Stevens-Crawford Heritage House, all located in Oregon City. Her responsibilities included expanding institutional programming, establishing strong partnerships, developing plans for growth, leading communications and fundraising.

Recognized as a leader of her generation, Claire was selected by the Getty Leadership Institute to participate in their NextGen17 program. She also serves as president of the Oregon Museums Association, a network of her peers throughout Oregon.

The afo board unanimously voted to ratify Claire’s selection by a blue-ribbon search committee led by Anne Monnier, partner, KPFF, and an afo board member. Anne says of Claire’s selection: “Claire is exactly the right fit for afo now and leading us into the next chapter. She is prepared to deal with helping afo develop younger audiences, connect with new resources, and carry forward an organizational culture that is important to afo’s board, staff, supporters, and members.”

A runner and trivia buff, Claire lives in Oregon City with her husband and two young children. Claire begins her duties with afo on November 1, following retirement of long-time executive director Jane Jarrett. Please join us in welcoming her to our community.

Architects in Schools Applications are Live!

Teachers, School Principals, Architects, Engineers, Contractors, and Architecture Students, this is a call to you! Every school year, afo’s Architects in Schools program places design professionals in 3-5th grade classrooms around Oregon for a six-week residency. Offered free of charge to schools, AiS teaches students about the influence of the built environment and empowers students to take on the role of a designer. They learn concepts through project-based learning, learn real-life skills such as team-work and communication, and are introduced to multiple career paths. None of this would be possible without the time dedicated by our volunteer design professionals.

Architects in Schools reached 4,500 students around Oregon last season, and we expect to receive even more requests from teachers this season. Help us meet the ever increasing demand by applying or sharing the application today!
