Bits and Pieces
August 15, 2017

Hey, girls and boys!  What time is it?  If you were a kid in the Midwest, your answer, of course, would have been "It's Howdy Doody Time".  But since we're not a kid in the Midwest, but a child of the Az.  desert, our answer has to be "It's Shop Hop Time"!!!  It's a fun time to be in Arizona and check out the eleven participating shops.  If you're new to the valley, stop by and ask for details of the hop and purchase your Passport for $5.  For that $5, you'll get a map of the area/shops and a 2017 charm.  Each shop you attend from Oct. 6-14 will stamp your passport, and you'll turn in your completed passport to the last shop you attend.   If your passport is one of the lucky ones drawn by us shop owners on Oct. 16, you may win a brand new 350 BERNINA machine as the grand prize.  But wait...you will also be eligible to be one of 11 winners of a $100 gift certificate donated by each participating shop, or a very nice gift basket full of fabrics, books and more.  Again, 11 winners!

Prizes aside, the hop stands on its own merits.  Each shop will present you with a demo of a product or a process to make your sewing/quilting/pressing/cutting easier or better.  You will also be given 1 of 11 steps for making a brand new, written just for our hoppers, quilt pattern.   After you've oohed and aahed at the demo, we will stamp your passport and encourage you to enjoy our shop before moving on.  Carpool, come with many friends, come alone, come with (usually) hubby...just come and enjoy what we all have to show you.  Go to lunch, don't rush!  There is plenty of time to make all 11 shops.

So why am I discussing this now, you ask?  Because we have added something NEW for you.  We are selling you a special black bag for $10 which will allow you, when you bring in your bag to any of the 11 shops on the FIFTH Saturday of the month (and there are 4 of them!) and get 15% off of your purchases that day!  The dates are printed on the bag as are the participating 11 shops.  The first date to take advantage of this opportunity is Sept. 30, 2017.  Bags are limited in supply, so get them while you can!  Other 5th Sat. dates are Dec. 30, 2017, March 31 2018 and June 30, 2018.   The tote itself is worth the purchase even if you can't be here for Shop Hop:  it's a heavy black fabric with mesh pocket on the front to hold your water bottles, maps, keys, phone or whatever.  The top has zipper for closure and lots of room on the inside.  Perfect for quilters and shoppers alike!

We want you to "Quilt Along" with us Oct. 6-14, and "Quilt Along" with your special bag on those 4 special Saturdays to get greater savings!  Remember that SVQ, as always, is open on Sundays from noon until 4:00, and there will be hoppers present.

Just want you to be aware that, as always, we will be open on Labor Day but only until 1:00.

As for classes, Phillis will be back from her wonderful vacation to teach Mastery 1 and 2 on Thursday.  Beginning Machine Embroidery with Jan will be Friday, Bags with Joan will be held Sat. and Sunday.  These last two classes are usually more filled, so this is an excellent time to take them:  you'll get more one-on-one time with the instructors, and that's always a plus!  Mary's Judy Niemeyer’s Intermediate class has been postponed for Monday (8-21) but the Beginners Class will be held as usual on Tuesday.

Please consider taking Quilt In A Day's French Braid class with CI Pam Hennings on Sat., part 1, from 9:30-3:30.  Part 2 is Sun. from 12:30-3:30.  You may use pre-cut strips or cut your own 2.5" strips and an acrylic template will be provided with the class to make things faster, easier, and less wasteful.  There are many uses for this braid technique, and making the French Braid is probably what got me started on paper piecing!  Baby steps and stepping stones are always a help!

Pajama Mamas this month will be held Aug. 25, and anyone is welcome and free to work on anything, in the company of other sewing enthusiasts (and remember that football pre-season is here, so it's a good time to get out among friends and sew to your heart's content!).  An instructor will be on hand to help with any problems or glitches you run in to.

And Floral Foundations, a new class, will be on 8-30 with Donna B.  The finished quilts are great for wall decorations or even large pillow tops.  This will just be your stepping stone into making more.

To repeat myself...the charms and bags are both limited in numbers, so get yours ASAP.  Some people even purchase multiple passports/charms so that they can make earrings!  The special color of the week, when you mention it to us, will be in honor of our beautiful Arizona sunsets.....yellows and oranges, to be precise.  Remember that Row By Row continues, and thanks to all of you who have let us know that you liked our whimsical row.  Especially our colorful woodpecker and hippy-vans.  Hope to see you soon, and know that you can always visit our on line shop!
