Dear PCCS Community,

Next Monday, August 21st, our area of the country will be able to witness a special astronomical event. At 1:20pm, the moon will pass directly in front of the sun, causing a solar eclipse. The southern Illinois area will experience a full solar eclipse, but here in Lake County we will witness an 87% coverage of the sun. The next solar eclipse in this area will take place in 2099!

Before the eclipse, each class will learn the science behind what will take place next Monday and will discuss how to safely view the solar eclipse. We appreciate you reviewing this important safety information with your child, as well. As a school, our staff and students will be participating in this historic event along with other schools and many thousands of people in our county. Each class will be equipped with 9 NASA-approved eclipse glasses to share; additionally, classes will be constructing and using pinhole viewers to safely see the eclipse. If you have purchased NASA-approved eclipse glasses and would like to send them with your child, please feel free to do so. If you do, please make sure those glasses are labelled with your child's name.

If you would prefer that your child not take part in viewing the eclipse, please contact your child's teacher by Friday.

Sincerely,

PCCS Administration
