National Newsletter - Summer 2017

For as long as I can remember, summer has always been my favorite season. When I was a kid, it was because I wasn't in school. Over the years, I've come to appreciate summer as both the time to kick back and relax, and get up and go!

Summer is...
Locally grown fresh fruit (peaches and tomatoes), vegetables (corn on the cob) and seafood (clams, crabs, oysters)
Hot days on the beach; big waves
Gratitude for air conditioning
Quality time with family and friends
An adventure to someplace new
Car trips
A new diet (!)
Time in the slower lane
A good book
Sunburn
A cold beer
TTN Pot Luck Suppers and Summer Picnics
Thinking of the here and now instead of tomorrow.

Montclair TPG Celebrating 10 Years!

The TTN-Montclair Peer Group celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 15 with a luncheon in a private train car at Rod's, a restaurant in Morristown. The refurbished Pullman parlor car, from the beginning of the 20th century, provided a lovely backdrop of lustrous woodwork.

Members reminisced about how they first learned about TTN, why they joined (unanimously because of the terrific women they met at interesting TTN events) and how they were a pioneering peer group in New Jersey. This dynamic group alternates meetings between external activities and in-home topical discussions.

Even geography isn't a deterrent to participation as one member, who moved to Vermont several years ago, continues to attend meetings. Now that speaks volumes about the bonds created among this group!

In Transit:  Lessons from Jackie
~ Ronni Sandroff

JACKIE
Jacquelyn S. Browne, Ph.D.
A TTN friend suggested I interview Jacquelyn S. Browne, Ph.D. when I needed to talk to a gerontologist for an article assignment. Jackie had helped the fledgling South Florida chapter get on its feet and sometimes providing meeting space at Nova Southeastern University, where she had developed and directed a masters degree program in gerontology

Her philosophy grew out of her almost 40 years of a private psychotherapy practice and teaching, which included courses in spirituality for social workers. A vivacious and sensitive therapist, Jackie believed passionately in the potential of the older years, and the studies that showed that spiritual and artistic development contribute meaningfully to improved mental and physical health.

Discovering Shared Housing
an Online Webinar

Housing is a big topic among our members.

We're pleased to share information about an upcoming webinar series (Sept 10, 17, 24 and Oct. 1) to help you better understand what it means to share a home.

In this webinar you will explore:
  • How sharing housing benefits those who do it. Including the significant cost savings.
  • What one needs to be compatible in sharing a home. (Might not be what you think!)
  • How to screen potential housemates safely and efficiently.
  • The perspectives of other participants so that you get a sense of what is reasonable to expect and what isn't.
By the end of the webinar, you should have a solid understanding how shared housing is an option for you.
