Join us for even more geocaching adventures this year!
Now in its third year, C-MASS GEOFEST will welcome hundreds of people to explore our trails, find caches, enjoy fun events and socialize. C-MASS GEOFEST returns in just a few short weeks.
Join us August 16-20 in and around Sturbridge as enthusiastic geocachers comb our region in search of geocaches. Other events will entertain children and families between forays onto our abundant trails and scenic spaces!
Activities in natural and exhilarating surroundings will familiarize visitors with the historical, dining and shopping finds as well. It will be a celebration of activism in the outdoors and residents and visitors alike are invited to mingle. Registration for the geocaching is free.
The Chamber of Central Mass South is extremely grateful to everyone who helped us organize and spread the word about the event and our wonderful local venues who will welcome geocachers throughout the festival. Sincere thanks to Bogey Lanes, Jimmy D's Ice Cream & Sandwich Shoppe, Teddy G's Pub & Grille, B.T.'s Smokehouse, Brush It Off Paint & Sip Bar, Mexicali Mexican Grill, Green Acres, White's Landing, and our main event host, Hamilton Rod & Gun Club.

Samantha Chase, Orthopedic Surgeon, Joins Harrington Physician Services
 Samantha Chase, M.D., has joined Harrington Physician Services Orthopedic Surgery Department.
Dr. Chase received her medical degree from the University of Buffalo SUNY, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
She completed an internship and residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program (HCORP), which includes four Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals: Boston Children's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. Residents in HCORP have access to one of the finest musculoskeletal research communities in the country. Dr. Chase then went on to complete her fellowship training at the Lahey Clinic focusing on surgery of the hand and upper extremity.
Dr. Chase will join Drs. Russell Donnelly, Young-Ho, Oh, Charles Sommer and Joseph Veneziano in the orthopedic surgery office at 94 South Street in Southbridge. Patients interested in scheduling an appointment should call 508-764-2772.

The HPS Orthopedic Surgery Department provides a variety of services to patients, including arthritis/osteoarthritis, tendon and ligament injuries, bone fracture and trauma, knee arthroscopy, meniscus tears, sports medicine, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon and splints and casts. Surgical options include minimally-invasive arthroscopic procedures with minimal scarring and shorter recovery time.

North Brookfield Savings Bank's Fundraiser to
Help Feed Camp Putnam Campers a Success
NBSB and Community Join Together to Help Feed Campers
Donna Tiso, North Brookfield Savings Bank Senior Vice President of Retail Lending and Camp Putnam Board Member along with Donna Boulanger, North Brookfield Savings Bank President and CEO presented a $2,263 check to Todd Stewart, Camp Putnam Executive Director for the NBSB Feed a Camper Fundraiser.
North Brookfield Savings Bank is pleased to announce the success of its "Feed a Camper at Camp Putnam" fundraiser, to help provide meals for young campers from low-income families. The fundraiser was held at all North Brookfield Savings Bank branch locations.
Altogether, the fundraiser allowed North Brookfield Savings Bank to present a $2,263 donation to Camp Putnam for campers that will attend the New Braintree camp. An initial $1,000 donation made by North Brookfield Savings Bank was followed by a very generous outpouring of donations totaling $1,163 coming from community members and customers at NBSB branch locations, and from NBSB employees through the Casual Jean Fridays program.
Camp Putnam provides a true camping experience for children and is affordable for all families regardless of income. It spends nearly $40,000 on food each summer, offering campers tasty yet healthy home-cooked and "kid-friendly" meals in a family-style atmosphere.
"We are so thankful to be a part of such compassionate communities who believe in giving back as much as we do," said Donna Boulanger, President and CEO of North Brookfield Savings Bank. "With the generous donations made by our community members, customers and NBSB employees, campers will be provided with well-rounded, nutritious meals when they are at Camp Putnam."
"As part of the 'Care and Share' mantra that's so central to our mission here, we are committed to providing campers with delicious, healthy meals," said Camp Putnam Executive Director Todd Stewart. "This donation from the Feed a Camper at Camp Putnam fundraiser hosted by North Brookfield Savings Bank will certainly be put to good use by helping offset the high costs of feeding hundreds of kids each year. We are very grateful for this support of the community."

Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical Adult Evening School Announces Three New Vocational Courses for the Fall
Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical Adult Evening School announced that it will be offering three new vocational courses for the fall semester. Bay Path will be offering Certified Nursing Assistant, Sheet Metal Worker Licensing Tiers and The American Welding Society 3G and 4G Certifications with a preparation course. These courses are in addition to the over 130 classes being offered at Bay Path's Evening School in Charlton.
Bay Path has been approved to offer a Certified Nursing Assisting program. This course is designed to be a pathway to the professional medical field. The course will run 117 hours with 29.5 hours being conducted at a local clinical site. The class will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning October 3. The course will be instructed by Ms. Donna McElroy - Routhier RN, BSN. She has over 20 years of nursing experience. One of Bay Path's Health Technology instructor Christine Piehl RN, BSN. will be assisting in the clinical portion of the course. The cost of this course will be $1325.00
In September, Bay Path will also offer the Sheet Metal Workers Licensing Tier program. This course is approved by the Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers. Bay Path is one of only two schools licensed by the board. This program will run 19 weeks. It will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning September 20th. This class consists of the required code lessons as well as lessons in sheet metal fabrication and setup. The cost of this class is $1350.00.
In November, Bay Path will offer The American Welding Society type 3G and 4G Welders Certification Exam and preparation course. This course is for experienced welders only looking to become certified in flat , horizontal and vertical welding or overhead welding. This class with exam runs over six nights. Monday November 27 through Thursday November 30. Testing will be conducted on Monday December 1 and Friday December 4. The cost of this course is: 3G exam with prep $449.00 4G with prep $449.00 both exams with prep $599.00.

 Members of Southcoast Health presented the Harrington HealthCare Emergency Department with signed T-shirts in support of Elise Wilson, RN, who was the victim of an attack in the Harrington Hospital Southbridge ER back in June.
In a brief ceremony Thursday, everyone expressed gratitude for Southcoast's generous gifts and Elise told the group how amazed she has been by the nationwide support for nursing and healthcare workplace safety.

A Farmer at the Table!
 Tickets are available for The Last Green Valley's (TLGV) annual feast and fundraiser, Tastes of the Valley! Proceeds from the event support TLGV's programs to conserve our natural resources and support sustainable agriculture. This year's event will be held on Sunday, August 27, at the Publick House in Sturbridge, MA. Join us to celebrate all things green, growing and delicious in The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor with a new twist on the region's favorite farm-to-table event!
Tastes of the Valley has been The Last Green Valley's signature fundraising event for the past 11 years. It showcases local farms and orchards by pairing products grown, raised, and created in The Last Green Valley with a variety of local chefs. This year's event will feature the traditional appetizer, dessert, and beverage tastings, plus a new twist - guests will also enjoy a farm-to-table, multi-course, sit-down dinner. Seated at each table will be a farmer, vintner, or brewer for guests to converse with as they learn more about what it takes to keep The Last Green Valley green, growing, and delicious.

Harrington Expands Oncology Services to Spencer
 Harrington Physician Services' (HPS) Dr. Yasser Rehman is now available to see oncology and hematology patients in Spencer at the HPS office, located at 118 W. Main Street (second floor).
Dr. Rehman, board-certified in medical oncology, has been seeing patients at The Cancer Center at Harrington in Southbridge since he joined HPS in August 2016.
"Dr. Rehman's new office location will provide better access to oncology care for residents in the Brookfields, Spencer, Warren and other surrounding communities," said Pam Zouranjian Connor, director of the Cancer Center at Harrington.
Patients will be able to schedule initial consultations and follow-up appointments in Spencer. Procedures and treatments will continue to be offered only at the Southbridge Cancer Center location.

Harrington Auxiliary Installs New Officers

Harrington Auxiliary installed new officers at its annual meeting on June 21, which was held this year at the Golden Lamb Buttery in Brooklyn, Connecticut. Officers serve a two-year term.
The new officers include President Connie Favreau; First Vice President Lucette Favreau; Second Vice President Barbara Avery; Treasurer Deborah Howard; Secretary Anne Dutka; and Directors Helen Lenti and Betsy Peppel. The Auxiliary committees have also been reorganized and new chairs and co-chairs will be appointed.
The Auxiliary, which celebrates its 85th anniversary this year, appreciates the service of the previous board and wishes the new board members a successful year.
Harrington Auxiliary, established in 1932, is a non-profit organization of dedicated and impassioned volunteers whose mission is to support and enhance the excellent services provided by the Harrington HealthCare System.

Harrington Physician Services Welcomes Ruth Benet, DO,
to Brimfield Family Practice
 Ruth Benet, DO, has joined Harrington Physician Services at its Brimfield Family Practice.
Dr. Benet received her medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine. She most recently completed a residency at Eastern Connecticut Family Medicine at
Prospect Manchester Hospital in Manchester, CT where she was co-chief resident.
Originally from central Massachusetts, Dr. Benet has experience in the full spectrum of family medicine, including simple in-office procedures like joint aspirations and suturing.
As an osteopathic physician, she has had additional training in the neuromuscular skeletal system and has an interest in functional medicine, which incorporates all available treatment options including supplements or complementary approaches to improve health.
Dr. Benet has participated in a number of research articles including the role of Osteopathic Manual Medicine in Congestive Heart Failure, pulmonary primary care, and renal and splenic infarct.
She is a member of several professional organizations including the
American Osteopathic Association, American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Practice and American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
Dr. Benet joins Drs. James Goodwin and Charles Cavagnaro, Nurse Practitioner Kayla Cross and Nurse Practitioner Kim Vetal to provide routine and preventive family medicine.

A hidden gem in Central Massachusetts, the AquaRiders are a water ski show team founded in 1960 performing a sport most expect to see only in the Southern and Mid-Western regions of the US. The show includes acts such as barefoot skiing, jumping, human pyramids, ballet lines, around the boat, strap and conventional doubles. Members have gone on to ski professionally at SeaWorld, Cypress Gardens and LEGOLAND.

Free "Clowning Around Workshop"

Gateway Players Theatre of Southbridge and Pasture Prime Players of Charlton present a FREE "Clowning Around Workshop" on Saturday, August 19th from 10am-Noon at the Charlton Arts and Activities Center, 4 Dresser Hill Road in Charlton. Open to children ages 8 and older, the workshop will feature how to apply clown make-up, the art of juggling, hands-on instruction in the art of performance, and just how to be a clown!

The workshop will be presented by Bay State Clown Arts featuring "Maggie the Clown", (Nicole Portwood). Nicole has spent the last 25 years working in every possible venue for clowns. Her credits include touring both nationally and internationally with Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, performing for guests at Disneyland and Disney World, and entertaining thousands of children and adults alike at birthday parties, company picnics, and schools and libraries.
This workshop is presented by a grant from the Charlton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

300th Anniversary of Brookfield Churches
The months of August and September will see a continuation of the 300th Anniversary celebration of the Brookfield Churches that trace their beginning to the meeting house that was built on Foster Hill in West Brookfield in 1717. Church celebrations will take place on
August 19, September 17, and October 14.
August 19, 2017 will feature a dramatized presentation by the
First Congregational Church of West Brookfield of the events surrounding the Church's 1851 expulsion of Lucy Stone, who later went on to become a leading figure in the women's rights movement. Now, in a period when times and attitudes have changed, the Church will seek a reconciliation with her spirit. The event will start at 10:30 A.M. at the bandstand on West Brookfield Common, to be followed by further events and lunch in the Church.

Harrington Auxiliary 9th Annual Car and Motorcycle Show
August 27
Does your garage house a '67 Pontiac Firebird? Or maybe your favorite ride is a red '65 Mustang convertible or a 2004 Dodge Viper. Regardless of make or model, buff up those classics and head to Connecticut for the 9th Annual Classic Car and Motorcycle Show. The Harrington Auxiliary once again sponsors "Cruising' into Healthcare" at Bogeys Ice Cream Stand/Thompson Speedway in Thompson, Connecticut, on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The cost to register a vehicle is $10. The first 100 cars receive dash plaques. No admission fee for spectators.
Trophies will be awarded for First, Second and Third Place. Registrants also vote for the People's Choice Award. One award will be given for the motorcycle deemed "Best in Show." The award ceremony takes place at 2:00 pm.
In addition to the Classic Car and Motorcycle Show, DJ Dick Salvas will spin your favorite oldies and Harrington on Wheels will offer health education and provide screenings.

The Spencer Fair, September 1-4
The Annual Spencer Fair will take place this year on September 1-4, 2017. The Spencer Fair is an old time, traditional country fair including ox and horse pulls, cattle, rabbit and poultry shows, hall exhibits, midway and outdoor entertainment, and should be a great time for all who attend. As of Thursday, April 27, 2017, Village Toastmasters will meet every Thursday from 7:00-8:15 pm at the offices of the Chamber of Central Mass South, located at 46 Hall Road, Sturbridge.
