About the NLLD
The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee, and Drainage District (known as NLLD) was formed in 1992 to provide drainage and flood protection services for the northern portion of Lafourche Parish, including the entire parish north of the Intracoastal Canal.
The District includes over 250 miles of levees and drainage canals, and over 40 pump stations.

Several Levee and Drainage Projects Now Underway Throughout North Lafourche
$5 million in construction contracts have been
awarded
for six projects since January.
The NLLD is making substantial progress on its commitment to improve flood protection and drainage in North Lafourche, and even more activity is expected in the months ahead.
In July, the District awarded three contracts for levee and drainage projects that will strengthen flood protection and improve drainage for Lafourche Parish residents and businesses, which comes on the heels of three other projects approved for construction earlier in 2017. These six projects are valued at over $5 million and signal the start of increased levee and drainage work that the NLLD plans to execute with local tax dollars that is further leveraged with bond proceeds and State funds.
Contracts were awarded at the July 18 Board of Commissioners meeting for the Lockport to Larose Valentine Return Levee Drainage Structure, Phase 1A of the Zeller/Larousse Forced Drainage Area, and Mathews Canal/Clotilda Levee Upgrades. In January, March and May, contracts were awarded for the Parr Pump Station, South Thibodaux Drainage Project, and Larose Valentine Return Levee Project respectively.
"These and all of our planned projects are critical to increase flood protection and improve drainage throughout North Lafourche, and we are eager to get this work underway," explains NLLD Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois.
"The people of North Lafourche can expect to see much more levee and drainage work like this in the months and years ahead as the District delivers on our commitment to protect our community, people, and way of life," he says.
South Thibodaux Drainage Improvements Nearing Completion
Byron E. Talbot Contractor, Inc. is nearly 80% complete with drainage improvements in the south Thibodaux area. The construction contract in the amount of $766,444.25 was awarded in March of this year. This project is intended to provide a larger outfall channel by constructing drainage improvements from Tetreau Street along the Acadia Road corridor to Martin Luther King Jr. Park and to an existing canal along the east side of the MLK park to the 40 Arpent Canal.
New CAT/MBI Buggy Gets to Work in the District
Since its arrival in March, t
he NLLD's new CAT/MBI buggy has been working hard in various areas of the District. The buggy was used to perform maintenance dredging in the Company Canal pump reservoir in the Valentine area this spring, and then moved to the west Thibodaux area for maintenance dredging in the Morvant Forced Drainage Area. Its next assignment will be to perform repair work along the Lockport to Larose West Hurricane Protection Levee.
NLLD Officials Meet with Members of Congress as Flood Insurance Reauthorization Draws Near

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is due for reauthorization by September 30, 2017, and North Lafourche Levee District and the LA Flood Risk Coalition continue to push for changes to the program that will sustain the flood insurance program while also making it more affordable for local residents.
NLLD President Cory Kief and LFRC Executive Director Jerome Zeringue traveled to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress July 24-28 about needed improvements to the NFIP.
Meetings were held with LA Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy, as well as Louisiana Congressmen Garret Graves, Ralph Abraham and Clay Higgins, and lawmakers from across the country.
Since March of this year, NLLD and LFRC reps have met with 90 U.S. Senators and Congressmen from 29 states to explain why a sustainable and affordable flood insurance program is so important to Lafourche and our coastal communities.

NLLD Commissioners Joni Tuck and Kenney Matherne attended the
LA SAFE
meeting in Mathews on July 26.
LA SAFE is a program aimed at helping communities like ours in South Louisiana plan how we will successfully adapt to our changing environment along the coast.
