Ever notice that you or your children get rashes every winter? Think about
eczema (atopic dermatitis) - a recurring rash that makes the skin dry, scaly, and very itchy. Children mostly get eczema, but it can continue into adulthood usually to a milder extent. Causes are unclear, but those with a personal or family history of other allergic conditions like asthma or hay fever are more likely to have eczema. Exacerbants include dry, cool air, dry skin, and assorted allergens. Lesions usually occur on the scalp, face, creases of knees/elbows, neck and wrists. The itching can be severe causing skin to bubble up, ooze, or weep; and can cause difficulty sleeping. Over time, skin color may change and/or thicken. Infection of these skin lesions is a concern as well.
Early diagnosis and treatment of eczema is important to control itchy, irritated skin, and to prevent new lesions and longer term side effects, including emotional stress. Dermatologist-prescribed medicines, skin care, and lifestyle changes are the hallmarks of management; including: topical creams, adequate skin moisturization, and keeping proper temperature and humidity levels at home.
Psoriasis is another skin condition - often causing scaly, red, itchy patches - that can worsen in the cool, dry months. This is a chronic, inherited condition in adults. Diagnosis and long-term management by a dermatologist is important as patients often need different types of medicines (from creams to washes to injectables), lifestyle changes, and adjunctive therapies like
excimer laser.
