Wastren Advantage, Inc.
CEO
appointed to SSU Board
PIKETON, OH - Ohio Governor John Kasich on July 27 appointed Steven A. Moore, President and CEO of Wastren Advantage, Inc., to the Shawnee State University (SSU) Board of Trustees.
The appointment is effective through June 30, 2026.
Moore, of Otway in Scioto County, is an SSU graduate, earning an Associate of Applied Science in plastic/chemical engineering technology, and a Bachelor of Science in natural science (chemistry). He has a Juris Doctorate from Capital University Law School, and graduated from the Executive Education Program at Harvard Business School.
He previously taught environmental law at SSU, and currently serves as a member of the school's Innovation Accelerator Advisory Board, which is helping the university with its plans to open an Innovation Accelerator in downtown Portsmouth to promote entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity in the region.
"I'm thrilled to work with President (Rick) Kurtz and his leadership team at SSU as a member of the Board," Moore said. "I hope to bring my perspective as a graduate and a business leader and add to the great things that are happening at SSU."
Since 2006, Moore has been President and CEO of WAI, a Piketon-based remediation services and facilities management company with project offices throughout the United States. During this period, his leadership has taken WAI from a regional firm with less than 50 employees to a national company providing products and services around the globe.
SSU President Kurtz said Moore brings a unique perspective to the board that will benefit students, as well as the Portsmouth community and entire region. "We look forward to working with Steve to advance higher education throughout Ohio - and further our mission to prepare today's students to succeed in tomorrow's world."
WAI owns in whole, or in part, more than 20 different entities ranging from providing environmental remediation and facility operations services for the federal government to manufacturing and processing plastics and specialty chemicals for customers around the world. Under his leadership, WAI has created hundreds of jobs and has developed new technologies and patents in several industries.
WAI specializes in the disciplined management of complex operations in high-hazard environments, and uses a project management approach to lower risk to its clients and perform work safely. Clients include the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Agriculture, the federal Bureau of Reclamation, and numerous commercial companies.

ELEMENTARY TEACHERS:
Stock Your Bookshelves
Beginning Friday (Aug. 4), teachers in elementary schools in every one of the eight counties served by Goodwill Industries of South Central Ohio are invited to visit their local store to pick up to 10 books for their classrooms, free of charge.
"We know teachers can be strapped to provide reading materials for their students, so we at Goodwill felt this was a good way to give back to our communities and our youngest citizens," said CEO Marvin Jones. "We receive thousands of books each year from our generous donors so what better way to recycle those that that are age-appropriate by getting them into the classrooms for the teachers to help their students with their reading skills."
To receive the books, teachers will need to show some form of proof of their employment at a school. The books will be available in a special area of each store so that the teachers can find the ones they feel are best for their students.
The books are on a first-come, first-served basis and the promotion will end when all of the books are gone. No purchase is required.
All Goodwill stores are open 9-7 Monday through Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. Stores are in Chillicothe, Circleville, Waverly, Washington Court House, Jackson, McArthur, Athens and Logan. To find the exact location, go online to

PORTS
Community Commitment
DASHBOARD
Dear Pike County Chamber of Commerce Members,
Here's the latest update to the PORTs Community Commitment DASHBOARD. Over the past quarter the PORTs site financial impact on our community increased by $17M which doesn't factor in our normal payroll. What really stands out since our last update are some of our education programs. In the spring we presented 13, Fluor-BWXT STEM Scholarships to some exceptional graduating HS seniors from Jackson, Pike, Ross and Scioto Counties. Presenting these scholarships at Senior Awards programs is one of my favorite things to do. Seeing the excitement and enthusiasm from the students and their proud parents takes me back to my graduation and that of my daughters. It's truly a special time.
Also this summer we put 41 college students to work as interns providing them with valuable hands-on experience and a steady paycheck. For our part we gained extra hands to complete important, but sometimes delayed tasks and a fresh perspective from someone learning or in some cases finding their trade. I'm proud to say we've put 179 students to work since this program started in 2011.
On behalf of our team and partner companies Fluor, BWXT and ch2M I'm glad to share this snapshot of our giving. As I've noted previously this chart accurately captures the raw numbers it doesn't come close to communicating the giving spirit of our people, their commitment to our community and their belief in our site mission.
Thank you,
Dennis Carr
