Scripture: Job 1-2 (selected verses)                 
Sermon: The People's Choice: Job's children as collateral damage-how can we square what happened to them with our faith in a loving God?

This Sunday's installment of the People's Choice summer worship series addresses one of religion's most profound subjects: the question of how to reconcile the concept of a God whose nature is goodness and love with the reality of the human experience of suffering.  Through the ages, people have turned to the Old Testament book of Job as they have struggled to connect the ancient traditions of faith with present suffering. As Christians, we also look to the cross and the death of God's treasured Son. 
 
There are no easy answers to the question of how we square the deaths of innocent young people with our faith in a loving God.  However, there is something to be learned from Scripture about the strength and comfort which God provides during experiences of suffering and how our own suffering can teach us to be angry at and energized against unjust suffering.

AMIGOS BACK-TO-SCHOOL BACK-PACKS 
We want to give you plenty of time to think about getting a backpack for our AMIGOS Tutoring Ministry. Many of our neighbors in Huntersville have difficulty providing their children with the proper resources to help them succeed in school.  Choose a boy or girl, grades Kindergarten-5th grade, or you may make a donation and we will do the shopping for you. Supply lists are located at the information center across from the church office. Please also write a note of encouragement to include in the backpack. On Sunday August 20 we will dedicate the backpacks during our 11 a.m. worship service. * Hot Topic - Everything Must Change by Brian McLaren
To prepare for Brian McLaren's preaching in the DCPC pulpit September 24, the pastors are reading his book Everything Must Change . They invite you to join them in the parlor on Sunday afternoon from 4pm to 5:30 pm in August (6, 13, 20, 27) to reflect and discuss Everything Must Change . A copy of the book is available in the church library for check out. In McLaren's book, he talks about how do the life and teachings of Jesus address the most critical global problems in our world today?  Our schedule will be:

August 13 - discuss chapters 10 - 18
August 20 - discuss chapters 19 - 26

During the month of August we will have a special month long Sunday school class at 9:45 a.m. in Jetton Hall. Each week church members will speak about their faith and reflect on their spiritual journeys.  Coffee will be available in Jetton Hall!

This Sunday we welcome Phyl and Steve Justus . They have been married for 36 years and have 4 children, a daughter in law, a grandson and a golden retriever. They have lived in Davidson and have belonged to DCPC since 2000. Steve's a doctor and Phyl's a nurse.
 
* Covenant Bible Study, Will start in September- If you liked the Disciple Bible study program, you'll love Covenant Bible Study! Interim Pastor Search Committee 
The interim pastor search committee  is seeking candidates to begin a 1- to 2-year term this fall, after the retirement of Senior Pastor Lib McGregor Simmons on October 31. On advice from our Presbytery, training and experience in interim ministry will be required for all candidates. CLICK HERE to send suggestions for consideration.  
Prayers and Concerns

the family of Gordon Cook. A service of witness to the resurrection will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, in Lingle Chapel .

Family of Dr. James Hunter. Dr. Hunter is the father of Rebecca Kryshtalowych.  He passed away on Sunday, July 30.
