HOLIDAYS ARE IN FULL SWING AT THE TRAFTON CENTER

By Thea Murphy
Director of the YMCA Trafton Center

Welcome back to The Seniors' Scene.

It is a beautiful winter morning, and we had our first snow yesterday, making it really feel like the holiday season.

We are in full swing at the Trafton Senior Center on Elm Street for the month of December. We had a wonderful "Holly Daze" celebration last weekend. The weather was perfect for the parade and tree lighting on Friday, and our members were out in force to enjoy the parade and, of course, a post-parade gathering at the Trafton Center.

Saturday morning, with the help of our friends from Wasco, we served 20 pounds of hot dogs, decorated over 200 cookies and painted many happy faces.

Next on the agenda, we are heading to Booth Bay for the Garden's Aglow exhibit at the Botanical Gardens. We will get back into town just in time for our Craft Fair this Saturday, Dec. 10. This fair is the perfect opportunity to shop local, have lunch and enjoy the day with friends.

We always have live music during lunch at the center on the first and third Fridays of each month, but for December we are excited to add a visit from the Tara Villagers to entertain at our Christmas Party on Dec. 23.

Even our Bingo is taking on a holiday theme with a cookie sale on Dec. 19. Our members will bring their best creations, and we will assemble packages to sell.

Now, just in case all this celebrating leads to an extra pound or two, we also have our regular programs of daily exercise to keep us in shape.

I know that this season can be stressful, and even a little lonely for some of us, so don't stay home alone! Come down to Elm Street and enjoy the season with us.

'Till next time . . .

A LETTER FROM THE CEO

Dear YMCA Friends,

We know that when we work as one, we can move people and communities forward. That's why we are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to learn, grow and thrive.

2016 was a big year for us! On October 29th, we celebrated our 75th anniversary of strengthening community. This year a record-breaking 260 children had the best summer ever at Camp Marland, our day camp program on Bunganut Lake. Our Trafton Senior Center also added an outdoor patio to provide additional space for senior activities.

As 2017 approaches, we are excited to continue our facility expansion project which will allow for a larger wellness area, increased enrollment in child care programs, and a youth and family center. We look forward to another year of serving community needs through our focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

This holiday season, we are grateful for all the members of our Y family and thank you for your continued support.

Together, we make a difference.

Warmest Regards,

Andy Orazio
CEO/Executive Director

SUPPORTING SANFORD'S KIDS: DECEMBER FOOD DRIVE/MEMBERSHIP RAFFLE
Are you aware that 1 in 4 kids in the state of Maine experience food insecurity? That 1 in 3 Maine kids qualify for food supplement benefits?

We want to know that the many children relying on free or reduced price school lunch as their main meal for the day have full plates - even outside of the school cafeteria.

Through December 23rd, we will be accepting certain non-perishable items to fill the backpacks of kids in need. All donated goods will benefit the Sanford Backpack Program, a local program dedicated to making sure that children in need receive adequate nutrition over the weekend. Our goal is to collect 500 items over the next 2 weeks!

We would like to show our gratitude for those who donate by entering donors into a raffle for a FREE one month YMCA membership. For every 5 items donated, a raffle ticket will be issued. Winner will receive a FREE one month YMCA membership.

Click here for a list of donation guidelines.  Want to take part? Stop by the welcome center and make a donation today!

STRENGTHEN YOUR COMMUNITY

At the Y, we believe we have something special - a sense of community - and that everyone should have access to it. With the help of 270 donors, we were proud to share the Y with more than 450 children, seniors, and families last year who otherwise might not have become part of our Y family.

This giving season, consider a gift to the Sanford-Springvale YMCA. Your gift helps a child discover who they are and what they can achieve, gives a family opportunities to learn, play and grow together, and empowers an adult to be their best self through the development of a balanced spirit, mind and body.
