PARTNER FAMILY SETTLES IN INGRAM VILLAGE

Congratulations to Shalonda and her daughter who are the newest residents of the Ingram Village subdivision in Ellendale. Shalonda settled on her home on July 25th.
VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN UP

On July 22, volunteers gathered in a parking lot off of Oak Street in downtown Laurel for a free community dumpster day. The Dumpster Day was setup through Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's Neighborhood Revitalization department in conjunction with the neighborhood revitalization grant recently received thanks to a partnership with Lowe's.

During the two and half hour event, 15 volunteers from Vital Church in Laurel, four Habitat staff members, three Seaford Lowe's employees, two AmeriCorps members, one Stand by Me staff member, and Bill McGowan a  representative of the town of Laurel, helped unload 16 vehicle loads of trash and yard waste into dumpsters. Three members of Vital church who brought their trucks and trailers, went to six area homes and  picked up additional waste. Many of the homes that trash was picked up from were previous partners of Habi tats in the repair program or had taken part in the   Rock the Blo ck  event in March.

In total two 30 cubic yard industrial roll-off dumpsters were   filled along with an ot her yard waste trailer. The next  dumpster day will t ake place November 18th in Laurel, the exact times and location for the dumpster will be announced closer to the event. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make this a successful day.

COMMON THREAD
Jan LoBiondo loves to sew. Jan has been sewing for more than fifty years. She says, "You only can sew so many things for your home, then it becomes more enjoyable to make them for someone else." That is why Jan started Common Thread.

Common Thread is a group of women that meets twice a month to sew household items for new Habitat homeowners. The group varies in size usually drawing between four and six ladies for a morning of sewing. The items, window valances, pillowcases, placemats, pillows, laundry hampers, quilted throws, etc. are presented, in a basket, to Habitat homeowners at their home dedication.  Jan stays in contact with the Habitat staff to make sure she is up to date on the partner families to best tailor items for the family.   During the past two years Common Thread has produced around 50 baskets thanks to Jan and her sewers.

If the family has a baby, Jan turns to another organization that she is involved with, Quilts of Love.  Quilts of Love makes baby quilts that are handed out to area organizations for at risk babies. The quilts are created during five "Quilting Bees" held each year, each "Bee" creating around 100 quilts.

Jan first volunteered on a build site with a Habitat affiliate in Baltimore many years ago. When she moved to Delaware, she volunteered at the Georgetown ReStore .  However, Jan saw an opportunity to get involved more regularly, two years ago, when the lady providing the baskets for Sussex County Habitat could no longer do so. At that time Jan had already been  involved with Quilts of Love for nearly 8 years.

Jan reached out to her church, Eagle's Nest Fellowship Church in Milton, DE to see about hosting a sewing session twice a month. Since then Jan and various ladies have met for 3 hours and sewn for Habitat.  In addition to starting the group, Jan also gathers all the supplies needed for the projects. She purchases different fabrics and threads so during a meeting the women can work on a specific project. At her home Jan has a running total of all the items that have been created and puts together the baskets for the families.

One of the sewers is a lady that is no longer able to come to the Common Thread meetings.  Violet is 85 years old and has become known as "The Placemat Lady". Violet loves making placemats. Jan gathers all the supplies for Violet and drops them off to her so that she too can continue to support Habitat.

"Habitat was a natural place for me to share my sewing skills because it is a Christian organization. I have been to a couple of the dedications; it feels very special to present the baskets to the families. You can see their gratefulness." Jan said.

Like Habitat, Common Thread is about bringing people together to build a stronger community; Habitat does it through use of a hammer, Common Thread through the use of a needle. Together the organizations can create not just a house but a home.

ST. LOUIS HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY SERVES FOR 8th YEAR

For the 8th consecutive year, St. Louis Parish of Clarksville, Maryland has served with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. In May students of the St. Louis College Ministry served and most recently 19 high school juniors and seniors with six adults served as part of the St. Louis Catholic Youth Ministry for one week during mid-July.

Du ring their week of service the students worked in
Laur el on a dem o on Oak Street  and on Market Street helping to clean up the property. During the remainder of the week the students worked to clean out a Habitat warehouse in Angola.

One of the students, Annaliese Jameson, made a realization about the connections she made during the trip, "Hard work creates friendships" she said.

Another student, Matt Greenlee, said "It puts into prospective how insignificant your problems are compared to those other people are faci ng."

St. Louis not only  brought eager workers to Sussex they generously donated $4,375.00, of that $2,716.01 was collected by the students who actively fund raised f or Habitat prior to their   trip. The remaining total was donated thanks to the parish.

We greatly appreciate the generosity shown by all the volunteers from the St.   Louis parish , both through their hard work and dedication and through their donations. We look forward to welcoming the groups back once again during the summer of 2018.
ST. PIUS X HS MINISTRY SERVE ON SITES THROUGHOUT SUSSEX
When the students of St. Pius X Catholic Church's High School Ministry came to Sussex County Habitat to serve for a week in  July they said they were up for anything, they "Just want to work" and work they did. This was the 8th consecutive year that the group from Bowie, Maryland has served with Sussex County Habitat. This year the students helped to finish off a variety of projects all across the affiliate and across the county.

During the week the group of 16 high school juniors and seniors along with six adults had the motto "Divide and conquer" as they tackled  project after project. They group worked at the Lewes ReStore, successfully built a fence, helped to empty storage pods, cleaned up the donation area, and orga  nized t he property. For two days a group helped to clean out a Habitat warehouse in Angola, including demolishing a make-shift office that was in the building. Groups als o spent time at  an AmeriCorps house in Georgetown, helping to prep it for an incoming class of AmeriCorps that will live there during their term of serve. There was some siding work that needed to be finished on a house in Ingram Village in Ellendale which a group  tackled a  long with grading the yard.  A group even spent a day working at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Laurel, the church that has housed St. Pius every year they have served.

Thanks to St. Pius High School Ministry.  Without the continued loyalty and support from groups like St. Pius Habitat would not be able to provide decent affordable housing to our partner families.
TWINBROOK BAPTIST SPENDS A WEEK IN SERVICE IN SUSSEX
The volunteers from Twinbrook Baptist Church in Rockville, Maryland have said that they found there "Service Home" here with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. In July twelve volunteers ranging in age from 27 to 85 journeyed for the second time to Sussex County to serve. Twinbrook first started serving with Habitat in 2004 even serving on the Delmarva Peninsula in Crisfield, Maryland after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

Twinbrook's church uses the tag line "Everyone is Welco me... Really!".  The staff and AmeriCorps Members, partner families, and even fellow volunteer group St. Pius X Catholic Church  were all welcomed by Twinbrook. They greeted many of the people they met with hugs and a hope heart, grateful for the opportunity to serve. Durin g their week, they worked alongside, a partner family member, on his home in Milton, and on the AmeriCorps house in Georgetown. Twinbrook helped to paint the AmeriCorps house preparing for the incoming class of service members, adding touches that made it feel more like a home.

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity would like to thank Twinbrook Baptist church for serving with us. We are glad that you have found your "Service Home" with us and look forward to welcoming you back next summer.
