UCLA researchers have discovered that children with autism have a tell-tale difference on brain tests compared with other children. Specifically, the researchers found that the lower a child's peak alpha frequency - a number reflecting the frequency of certain brain waves - the lower their non-verbal IQ was. This is the first study to highlight peak alpha frequency as a promising biomarker to not only differentiate children with autism from typically developing children, but also to detect the variability in cognitive function among children with autism.

Autism spectrum disorder affects an estimated one in 68 children in the United States, causing a wide range of symptoms. While some individuals with the disorder have average or above-average reasoning, memory, attention and language skills, others have intellectual disabilities. Researchers have worked to understand the root of these cognitive differences in the brain and why autism spectrum disorder symptoms are so diverse.

An electroencephalogram, or EEG, is a test that detects electrical activity in a person's brain using small electrodes that are placed on the scalp. It measures different aspects of brain activity including peak alpha frequency, which can be detected using a single electrode in as little as 40 seconds and has previously been linked to cognition in healthy individuals. In the April 2017 Journal of Developmental and Physical Disability, Mayes et. al, published an article entitled: Tantrums are Not Associated with Speech or Language. This research is important from clinical, research as well as advocacy perspectives.

The authors investigated the common notion that children with autism tantrum because they cannot communicate effectively. This notion is connected with research that behavioral methods can replace tantrums with words. Most behavioral plans for children with autism including 'manding' training, that is, training children to ask for things they might want. And yet what Mayes, et. al. found was the opposite: less language was not associated with parent reports of more tantrums. In fact those with more language had more tantrums. They conclude that we need to think of tantrums as not associated with language deficits, but perhaps a learned behavior.

Netflix's newest original series about autism, "Atypical," doesn't premiere for another month, but you can catch the show's official trailer on The Mighty. The eight-episode comedic series follows Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), a high school senior on the autism spectrum, and his family as he navigates dating, school and being a teenager. The show also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rapaport as Sam's parents.

"We've seen the search for love from a neurotypical perspective but not from a point of view like Sam's," Robia Rashid, the show's creator and executive producer, told The Mighty. "I liked the idea of telling a familiar story - the search for those things - from a different perspective, from a voice that's not often heard." Read on...

A recently published study demonstrates a link between telomere length, which is a mark of biological aging, and bipolar risk. The research helps to explain why bipolar disorder often comes hand-in-hand with other age-related diseases.

Individuals with bipolar disorder, which is sometimes referred to as manic depression, experience shifts in mood from feeling extremely energized and elated, to hopeless and depressed. It affects an estimated 2.6 percent of adults in the United States each year.

Aside from the psychological disruption, bipolar disorder is linked to a range of other diseases normally associated with advanced age, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Read on...

I am a mother to an 11 yr old boy diagnose with Moderate Autism, ADHD and severe speech delay. I was able to move him from Chula Vista School district where he was not receiving the best of services in anyway, to a Charter School close to the exit at Market st coming out of FWY 15. I was wondering if anyone could give me information of a young, responsable adult who could baby sit and transport my child from his new school to home at eastlake. And some days stay with him for a few hrs until I got back from work around 5pm. I will pay for miles and obviously for the care at home. NFAR Teacher's Grants for educators of students with autism.

Autism affects one in every 68 children in the United States, and a growing number of students each year the classrooms across San Diego County. Autism often affects the way the individual receives and processes information. A person with autism may also have sensory issues that interfere with learning.

To help, NFAR awards funding to educators to support the specialized academic needs of their students with autism. These grants give educators a vehicle for piloting new teaching tools, as well as funding of technology and programs that address key areas of concern for students with autism, such as social skills training, reading comprehension, developing effective communication skills for verbal and non-verbal students, as well as reducing sensory and behavioral issues that interfere with learning. In the inclusive classroom, special and general educators complement each other. Before inclusive education was part of the educational landscape, special and general educators had different roles. Here are a few ways that the roles of special and general educators have evolved.

Before: The special education teacher was only responsible for the education of students with disabilities.

Now: Both special and general education teachers have a responsibility for the education of all students including those with disabilities.

Before: Some special education services were provided with a "pull-out" model, where students were taken to a separate place to learn skills and were provided by a special education teacher.

Now: Since the "pull-out" model can interfere with a student's sense of belonging in the classroom, special education can be provided in the context where it naturally occurs with a special educator in the general education environment. Read on...

2017 International Peace Day Theme: Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All

For the second year, The Art of Autism (AoA) is supporting International Day of Peace ~ or Peace Day through our call for peace-themed poems and art. We encourage you to share your vision, imagination and personal connection to peace through words, visual art and/or photography. Everyone who is or loves someone with autism is invited and encouraged to participate. See last year's submissions here and here.

Peace Day is observed around the world each year on September 21st. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace. AoA can support this through art, music, dance, theater, poetry, film, creative writing and photography. Read on...

Include Autism's Inclusion Baseball League provides a fun and exciting baseball experience to youth who are diagnosed with autism, offering teams matched with peer pal volunteers from all over San Diego county. The goal of this sports inclusion program is to serve as a social bridge between kids and teens with a developmental disability and their typically developing peers. On the second Saturday of the month, September through June, teams of kids and teens with a developmental disability are paired up with local youth baseball players to promote a fun athletic experience for both the kids with autism, ages 8 - 22 (players do not have to be Community Coaching program participants) and young athletes in the community. Registration is $75 for the season.

Include Autism's CC Social Club is a community-based, Saturday social skill and friendship development program for teens and young adults ages 13 - 17 and 18-29 that have challenges in the areas of social communication and relationship building as part of their developmental disability. The CC Social Club meets morning or afternoon on either two or four Saturdays a month in peer groups including typically developing peers. Our goal is to build the skills to maximize functional independence, enhance social inclusion opportunities, and build natural networks of support to live, work, and socialize as independently as one chooses.
