Groundbreaking held for Old Dixie Highway Project
The City recently held a ground breaking ceremony for the Old Dixie Highway Complete Streets Project. The initiative, which spans from N.E. 13th Street to the South Fork of the Middle River, is a community-driven, grass roots effort that represents our shared community vision to implement Complete Streets enhancements on Old Dixie Highway to create a more connected community.
The project will help improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow, enhance neighborhood accessibility and mobility, and provide a safe and convenient roadway for walkers, bikers, transit riders, and motorists. Highlights include new bike lanes, sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, traffic calming measures, infrastructure improvements, and new entryway monument signs.
This project also underscores the City's commitment to Vision Zero, which is our street safety action plan designed to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets to Zero, ultimately saving lives. Congratulations to our Transportation and Mobility Department and our Public Works Department for all of their efforts to get this project off the ground.

Dog Park coming to Holiday Park
Attention dog lovers! The City recently broke ground on a new dog park that will be located in Holiday Park! The $106,000 project will be constructed on a 1.5 acre parcel that will designate 12,500 square feet of land for small dogs and 48,000 square feet for large dogs.
The park will be completely enclosed with a mesh vinyl coated black chain-link fence and will feature dog water fountains, waste stations, benches, and other amenities. The project will provide a safe, secure and convenient environment where dogs can exercise, run, and play freely. It will also be a place where dog owners can gather to socialize, engage, meet new people, and make new friends. The park is expected to be completed in early 2017.

The Seminole Hard Rock's "Winterfest Boat Parade" is December 10
The "Winterfest Boat Parade" will begin at 6:30 p.m. December 10th, from the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale to Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach.

Learn About Landscaping Policy Changes
The City of Fort Lauderdale will host a meeting to discuss upcoming policy changes to tree mitigation calculations on Tuesday, December 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Code Conference Room of the Department of Sustainable Development, which is located at 700 NW 19th Avenue. The meeting will provide neighbors an opportunity to learn more about policy updates to the City's Unified Land Development Regulations (ULDR) that will go into effect January 1, 2017. Topics to be discussed include Equivalent Value (Specimen Tree 18" DBH and greater)

Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Collection Event set for January 14, 2017
The City of Fort Lauderdale is offering neighbors a convenient and responsible opportunity for disposal of hazardous waste, electronics, clothing and household goods. Unwanted items will be collected at a drop-off event at Mills Pond Park from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017.
Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes common household items that contain toxic chemicals and therefore need proper handling during disposal.
The Salvation Army will be onsite to collect items in good condition, including:
- Clothing
- Shoes
- Linens
- Small household items
- Small kitchen items, and
- Dishes
No furniture, mattresses or other large items will be accepted.
Proof of residency in the partnering cities of Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Creek, Lauderdale Lakes, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach or Tamarac is required (driver's license or utility bill) for hazardous waste and electronics drop-off.
There is no residency requirement for donations to The Salvation Army.
These drop-off events are critical to protecting the environment by reducing the volume of waste in landfills and preventing the contamination of ground water.
Mills Pond Park is located at 2201 NW 9th Avenue (Powerline Road) in Fort Lauderdale.

King Tides Expected December 12-16, 2016
Flooding in low-lying areas is more likely in the fall months, as the close proximity of the moon, high tides, rising sea levels, and inclement weather conditions combine to exacerbate flooding risks.
As a coastal community with numerous low-lying areas and 300 miles of canal coastline, Fort Lauderdale neighbors are advised to be especially vigilant from now through December, when tides are expected to be at their highest levels for the year.
While the City maintains an extensive stormwater master plan and is instituting both aggressive maintenance and innovative adaptation solutions to address drainage, including the installation of tidal valves, the location and natural geography of the City makes neighborhoods susceptible to flooding. Remember that flooded streets may be covered in either fresh or saltwater. Please take caution whenever driving on flooded streets. When in doubt, turn around.

Holiday Solid Waste Services Schedule
Sanitation collections (trash, recycling, yard waste) will not be impacted during this holiday season, with the exception of bulk pick-up. Bulk pick-up has been cancelled for Monday, December 26, 2016. The make-up day for bulk pick-up will be Thursday, December 29, 2016, except for the section of Melrose Park normally serviced on the 4th Monday of the month, which will have a make-up collection day on Friday, December 30, 2016.

Gold Medal's fleet of trucks recently started providing recycling services in Fort Lauderdale.
The collection day schedule stays the same, however, hours of collection may vary between 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. To ensure collection, please place your blue cart curbside the evening before your scheduled collection day or no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection.

Fort Lauderdale and Mar del Plata celebrate 16 years as Sister Cities
With the collaboration of Sister Cities Mar del Plata and Greater Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International, an event was recently held to celebrate 16 years as Sister Cities.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Captain Gabriel Zahora presented a congratulatory letter from Mayor John P. "Jack" Seiler to Mar del Plata Mayor Carlos Fernando Arroyo.
The two cities have several ongoing projects including training for emergencies and fire prevention as well as economic cooperation.

Volunteers needed at tax time
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program provides FREE tax preparation services for individuals and/or households with an income of less than $54,000.
Volunteers must be at least 18-years-old and are asked to commit four hours per week from January 10 to April 15. Free training is provided and no experience is necessary.

Ring in the New Year with us!
Join us for the Fort Lauderdale Orange Bowl Downtown Countdown, a spectacular New Year's Eve celebration that takes place from 3:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. along SW 2nd Street between SW 2nd and 5th Avenues.
From 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the event features family-friendly activities including bounce houses, inflatable games, face painting, contests, dancing with the DJ, and an early countdown for kids.
Live music on two stages kicks off at 8:00 p.m. giving adults an opportunity to dance the night away as we prepare to say goodbye to 2016 and hello to 2017.
This year's midnight countdown features the return of our popular larger-than-life illuminated anchor. Measuring 20 feet high, 17 feet wide and weighing more than 700 pounds, the anchor is embedded with close to 12,000 color-changing LED lights with a wide range of features and effects that will create a spectacular visual display for event-goers as it descends from 100 feet in the air above the main stage as the final seconds of 2016 tick down and we usher in the New Year.
