President's Message

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed it's the only thing that ever has."        Margaret Mead

Sharon Mitchell

This quote from Margaret Mead is a favorite of mine, and I always think of it at this time of year.  WHY?  Because we are only weeks away from the Annual Awards Celebration, when Impact 100 will award two grants of $108,000 each.  These grants will enable two organizations to do a breakthrough, transformational project.  And we are able to give these grants ONLY because we have wonderful, passionate members - our own group of "thoughtful committed citizens who can change the world".

Each of our five Finalists has proposed an amazing project that has the potential to make a lasting impact in our community.  Our Finalists and the projects they have proposed are (in the order they established):

4C for Children
Project:  School Readiness Matters:  Early Intervention for Hispanic Children
Kennedy Heights Arts Center -
Project:  Arts for All
Healthy Moms and Babes -

Project:  Sexually Transmitted Infection Mobile Outreach- Education, Testing and Treatment

Crayons to Computers -
Project:  Mobile Service Delivery Program
Easter Seals TriState/Building Value -
Project:  Remove, Reduce, Revitalize

It will be extremely difficult for our members to select only two of these programs to fund - since all of them are very strong candidates.  Because they are all so strong, I'm absolutely convinced that the two programs that are selected will have a positive Impact in our community.

I hope you can join us for the Annual Awards Celebration (AAC) on September 24th. This event is the culmination of the Impact 100 year - the opportunity for you to hear from the Finalists, cast your vote, network and enjoy other Impact 100 members, enjoy a delicious dinner, and see which organizations receive our 2013 Grant Awards.

If you are unable to attend the Annual Awards Celebration on September 24th, please vote via absentee ballot.  We want all of our members to vote!  You can get your absentee ballot by sending your request to:[email protected]Our wonderful administrator will send you an absentee ballot along with a conflict of interest form.  If you return both by Friday, September 20th, your vote will be included in the final official count.

The Annual Awards Celebration is also a wonderful opportunity to invite your friends and colleagues who may be interested in learning more about Impact 100 and potentially becoming new members.  This event is the absolute best opportunity to see Impact 100 in action.  And if we increase our membership contribution to $300,000 - next year we can award 3 transformational grants!

Please remember to register for the Annual Awards Celebration, and invite your friends today!!!

Warm Regards,

Sharon Mitchell

The IMPACT of Impact 100

Mercy Neighborhood Ministries Class Observation

Notes from a member:

Wow - we absolutely invested in the right program!

Today I visited Mercy Neighborhood Ministries Home Care Aide Training program. When we arrived, the students were reviewing the final exam they had taken the day before because the instructors wanted to ensure that they understood the correct answers. Everyone was fully engaged and very lively. The students seemed genuinely excited to have graduation within reach.

We then moved into the practice session for the practical exam. I observed a group of six women, ranging from 22 to 32 as they worked in an "apartment," caring for their "elderly" patients. Watching these girls in action gave me confidence that the clients they serve will be well taken care of! They were kind, polite, thoughtful and conscientious. They were also confident - a wonderful trait to see in young women, some of whom have not yet earned their high school diploma (MNM offers programs to help clients earn their GED as well).

I am so glad that I had the chance to personally observe the students in action. The women of Impact 100 made a great decision last year when we voted to change the lives of numerous individuals by funding MNM. From the students who are furthering their education to the elderly who will be served, the benefits will be felt far and wide. Congratulations Impact 100, you chose well.

Who I am.

I am married, have two boys age 21 and 16 and a very lovable hound dog named Reesie. I am an avid golfer and diehard Ohio State fan. I own my own marketing consulting and media management firm.

What got you involved in Impact 100?

Impact Member for 5 or 6 years can't quite remember! I was introduced to Impact 100 by Sally Nugent at a time when I was looking to get more involved in the community in some way, but have limited free time so the idea of "flexible membership" was very appealing to me.

What keeps you a member?

What I love most about Impact 100 is learning about all of fantastic non-profits in our community. I also love engaging with such a smart, ambitious group of women dedicated to giving back to our community.

Hands On Opportunity

Here's a great opportunity to see firsthand how an Impact 100 grant is making a difference.

The Freestore Foodbank, 2008 Impact 100 grant recipient, utilized its transformational grant to underwrite the expansion of the PowerPak program to more schools. The PowerPak program provides food to students over the weekend to ensure have something to eat. A typical PowerPak contains: canned fruit, 2% milk, cereal, red beans and rice and applesauce.

Join fellow Impact 100 members and families (family members must be 13 years or older to participate) to pack Powerpaks to be distributed to students in need.

Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 1 -4 p.m.
Freestore Foodbank Mayerson Distribution Center
1250 Tennessee Avenue
Cincinnati, Ohio 45229

Limited number of participants please reserve your spot early!

Please note you will receive a Volunteer Registration Confirmation from the FreestoreFoodbank that will need to be completed online prior to the event.

Impact of Impact 100 in Daily Life

Impact 100 affects lives through children observing their parents. Last fall, the sixth graders at Mercer Elementary in Anderson collected 1,000 books and hundreds of warm socks and toothbrushes as part of class project to make a difference for other children in the community.  Four of the student leaders have mothers who are active members of Impact 100: Mary Chick (son Evan), Andrea Flora (daughter Reilly), Lisa Rammes (son Carter) and Annemarie Henkel (son Peter) - so Impact 100 ripples through to the next generation.

The project was part of a Developmental Assets program designed to help youth become caring, competent adults, said Annemarie Henkel, parent volunteer who helped coordinate the giving program."This year we tried something new with the Fall Project by offering the students the opportunity to help three organizations. They went above and beyond our expectations collecting over 1000 books, putting together approximately 120 dental goodie bags and collecting two boxes full of socks," Henkel said.

The 120 sixth graders formed teams lead by student volunteers paired with a parent volunteer. Teams collected books and made bookmarks for Stepping Stones agency for people with disabilities, gathered socks for the Interparish Ministry, which provides food and clothing for families in need, and made dental kits with toothbrushes and toothpaste for the HealthPoint dental program in Northern Kentucky. More information can be found here.
