Two Missouri Amtrak stations named top 10 nationwide
Kirkwood and Washington receive top marks in customer service

Two Missouri River Runner stations, Kirkwood and Washington, made the top ten list in the Amtrak station customer satisfaction survey for overall station experience in FY 2016. Customers gave Kirkwood and Washington stations high rankings for friendliness of staff, ease of train boarding process, cleanliness of station and personal safety. Kirkwood tied for first and Washington ranked eighth.
Amtrak's Missouri River Runner route travels daily between Kansas City and St. Louis with stops across the state at Kirkwood, Washington, Hermann, Jefferson City, Sedalia, Warrensburg, Lee's Summit and Independence.
"We're excited to see two of our station stops ranked in the top ten of all U.S. stations. These rankings are reflective of the communities they serve and the stations have always been a gateway to them," said MoDOT Administrator of Railroads Eric Curtit. "The stops add to their economic development and overall prosperity."
Amtrak specials are available for winter trips on the Missouri River Runner line. Passengers can save 20 percent on adult fares for travel Jan. 3 through March 31, 2017. When winter weather hits, Missouri drivers need to know the latest road conditions. That's why MoDOT hosts the Traveler Information Map on its website. It's easy to check the map online or download it as an app for your mobile device.
Although checking the map for winter road conditions is very popular with drivers, the map also shows work zones, incidents and other closures that help drivers get to their destination.

This image shows what the traveler information map looked like during a snow storm last winter. Almost every area of the state was experiencing snow creating a very colorful map.

Shovel smart - here's the secret
Once should be enough when it comes to shoveling snow out of your driveway after a winter storm. Unfortunately, that snow can end up re-deposited across your driveway entrance when snowplows begin to clear the roadways. MoDOT has a simple solution to help you avoid a second round of shoveling.
Scooping snow about 10 feet away to the left of your driveway is the key. This leaves enough room for a snow plow to deposit the excess snow in the free area you created, keeping your driveway entrance clear.

New appointment to the Missouri Highways
and Transportation Commission

Dr. Edward D. Hillhouse of Villa Ridge is the newest member of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.
|
Gov. Jay Nixon has appointed
Dr. Edward D. Hillhouse (R) of Villa Ridge to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. The Commission works to preserve, enhance and support the state's transportation system. The commission makes and tracks transportation policy and has authority over all state transportation programs and facilities, as provided by law, including bridges, highways, aviation, railroads, public transportation, ports and waterborne commerce.
Dr. Hillhouse served as Presiding Commissioner of Franklin County from 2003 to 2010 and was executive director of the East-West Gateway Council of Governments from 2010 to 2015. Currently the Dean of the Franklin County Regional Learning Center of Missouri Baptist University, Dr. Hillhouse served as superintendent of schools in Pacific for 14 years. He holds a bachelor's degree from Missouri State University; a master's degree and specialist degree from the University of Missouri; and a doctorate in educational administration from Saint Louis University. The Governor has appointed him for a term ending March 1, 2017.

Pedestrian fatalities on the rise
Nearly 10 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities are pedestrian deaths
 Walking is an essential transportation mode for many Missourians. For transit or motor vehicle users, every trip begins and ends as a pedestrian. Public health, economic and environmental factors are elevating the importance of this mode. Many citizens do not have access to a personal vehicle, are not physically capable of driving, simply decide not to drive, or delay licensure.
To date, 83 pedestrians have been killed in Missouri traffic crashes this year. This equates to nearly 10 percent of all statewide traffic fatalities.
"Motor vehicle crashes involving pedestrians don't usually occur in extremely large numbers, but when a pedestrian is involved in a traffic crash, the potential for injury or death is much greater," said MoDOT's Director of Highway Safety Bill Whitfield. "It's imperative that drivers and pedestrians use extreme caution at all times," he said.
