VWTH Housing & Outreach Program
When a woman makes the decision to leave an abusive relationship, it is a decision faced with mixed emotions - from sadness, to fear, uncertainty, and instability. Frequently, her most common concerns are how to find safe and affordable housing and how to look for a steady source of income.

The VWTH Housing & Outreach Program (HOP) provides support services to women survivors of domestic abuse who are currently staying at our Emergency Shelter or have recently left. HOP assists women and their children with safe and stable accommodations while they are recovering from the effects of domestic violence and abuse. In addition, our dedicated and specialized Housing & Outreach Worker conducts follow up counselling, referring clients to community resources within the first few months after leaving the Shelter. Access to HOP also includes the opportunity for women to participate in a free weekly drop-in support group, with childcare provided.

Our HOP staff continuously conduct advocacy efforts and build relationships with Victoria landlords, property managers, second-stage and third-stage housing providers, as well as other low-cost housing providers in the community.

VWTH Compassionate Pet Boarding Program
Victoria Women's Transition House is excited to launch a Compassionate Pet Boarding Program for the pets of women and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse.

While we know that there is a link between domestic abuse and animal abuse, VWTH does not have the means to house companion animals at our Emergency Shelter. This leaves many women facing the difficult decision to either leave their pets behind or remain in the abusive environment. Sadly, many victims stay in an abusive home for fear of subjecting their pets to continued abuse, if left behind. Equally disturbing, animals are often left with their abusers to face torture or even death.

Women with pets may not leave their abuser because:
  • Many shelters will not accept pets;
  • Pet safety may be compromised if in an abusive home;
  • Knowing a woman's concern for the pet, an abusive partner may use this against her - threatening or abusing the animal directly.
VWTH wants to eliminate as many barriers as possible to help women to make changes in their lives and to leave an abusive partner. To help with this, we have established the VWTH Compassionate Pet Boarding Program in partnership with our local SPCA.

To support this initiative, you can make an online donation or call our Community Office at 250.592.2927.

An Evening with Nahid Sewell
Friday, September 15 @ 5pm - 7pm
Victoria Golf Club, 1110 Beach Dr.

Join us for An Evening with Nahid Sewell, award-winning writer, speaker and author of The Ruby Tear Catcher: An Iranian Woman's Story of Intolerance. Nahid will offer a glimpse into how the Middle East has become the breeding ground of fundamentalism. Describing life in Iran before and after the Islamic Revolution of the 1970's, her story evokes images of blue-tiled mosques, Persian kings, the taste of lamb kabob and saffron rice in contrast with curfews, gun-toting soldiers, compulsory hijab, and an insatiable quest for freedom. Describing the radical changes under Islamic rule, Nahid charts the social, cultural, political and religious changes that have taken shape in her country in the past thirty years, with particular emphasis on their impact on women.

This event includes a pre-presentation Wine and Cheese Reception, Presentation and Book Reading with Ms. Sewell, a Question and Answer period and a Book Signing.

Tickets are $50 ($25 tax receipt) and available through the Victoria Golf Club.
