A Word from Fr. Dufresne on the Next Steps
in the Parish Renewal Process
I am touched by the congregation 's heartfelt and incisive reflections at Sunday's annual meeting on where we are and where we might be headed in the future as
a parish. Thank you for your important contributions.
I am presently integrating your comments into a preliminary draft of a "Findings and Renewal Plan" which I will share with the vestry next Monday. The vestry and I will then present a final draft for your consideration at a specially called parish meeting
on Sunday, August 13 following worship.
I look forward to this second important conversation and to the decisions that might emerge on that day.

Women's Wilderness Trip
Join in for the adventure -- A few spaces are available on the St. Brendan's Women's Wilderness Trip for September 11-14, 2017 to the beautiful Katahdin Lakes
Wilderness Camps.
Plans are underway and details to those who are signed up will be sent out a few weeks before the trip. KLWC provides accommodations (group cabins) with bedding, great food, boats & equipment & a fabulous setting for $444.00/person (half due as deposit). The trail walk
in is about 3 miles. A small sea plane is available to fly 2 people in (for $85/each way). Last year some of us were fortunate and saw a black bear on the walk out. The location is inside Baxter State Park on a gorgeous lake.

Seminar on Finding Joy Continues:
Edward Dufresne+ will continue the discussion on the topic, "Finding Joy"
at 9am August 13th, and the fourth and final session will be on September 10th, both following the 10am worship service.
The main text for discussion is
The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics include: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor,
The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.

Keeping Hope Alive: Despite 50 Years of Occupation
An Evening with George Rishmawi, Christian Palestinian activist
Monday, August 7, 7 p.m., at the Blue Hill Public Library
Member of a Palestinian family long engaged in non-violent resistance to Israeli occupation, George Rishmawi directs both the Siraj Center for Holy Land Studies and Masar Ibrahim, a program which brings people from all faiths and nations to walk the Abraham Path to learn Abrahamic values and traditions. Co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement and active in many local and international organizations, George is committed to justice for Palestine and works to build a sense of hope and purpose for the future in the midst of ongoing oppression.

Spiritual Encounters at Life's End
"Spiritual Encounters at Life's End" - a talk by author Chaplain Joan Maxwell - will draw on her work as a palliative care hospital chaplain as described in her recently published memoir Soul Support. The talk will include true (anonymized) stories of dying patients' spiritual experiences and some information about ways to support dying loved ones.
The talk will be held Thursday, August 17th at 5pm at St. Brendan's, free of charge (offerings will be accepted).
Copies of the book are available on Amazon and will also be available in August at
the Periwinkle in Deer Isle and Blue Hill Books.

Scripture Notes for The Feast of the Transfiguration:
Today we celebrate the Lord's Transfiguration, when his divinity shone out
through his humanity. Jesus, on that occasion, rejected Peter's suggestion that
they remain on the mountain in that light. Instead he led them down to confront
the gathering powers of darkness which would seek to extinguish the uncreated
Light.
It is difficult to forget that on this date humankind saw a different sort of light
burst
over the city of Hiroshima. That event reminds us that the power to destroy
is still loose
in the world. Yet in Christ we meet the power that overcomes the
violence of our world, liberating all people to become who God created us to be,
living reflections of God's
own glorious image and likeness.
In the Eucharist we are called into the dying and rising of Christ. We are made
partakers of his transfigured
life through sharing in the death of him who, in dying, destroyed death. We are sent forth to carry on and extend his victory.
In this liturgy, then, the signs and sacraments of the Household of God stand in stark contrast to those powers of this world which destroy. In hope-filled song and praise
we join our Lord and share his peace which shines forth in a darkened world.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Jan Place, William, Pat Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudice, Sidney, Kathy Gray, Hannah Scaife, Barbara Wright, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility, and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
