Following a presentation from Dr. Xinjie Cui at the PolicyWise Research and Practice Showcase on November 29, 2016 in Edmonton, The Child and Youth Data Laboratory released the  Program Overlap Matrix  and the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Population Profile

The  Matrix  is the first deliverable from the exciting longitudinal study,  Experiences of Albertan Children and Youth Over Time, 2005-06 to 2010-11 . The  Matrix  is a visualization of program overlap rates and a fabulous way to explore government service use by Albertans.

Program Overlap Summaries provide summaries of program overlap rates and details of how those rates were determined and validated.

Matrix Hotel Edmonton and Webcast

In  collaboration with key social sector Ministries, PolicyWise' Child and Youth Data Laboratory will share the first ground-breaking results from its longitudinal, cross-ministry analysis of over two million Albertans and their use of government services over the span of six years. Findings will be presented by CYDL research scientists using online, interactive data visualizations.

A cross-sectoral panel will discuss the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder profile findings and how these results will inform policy and service provision. Round table talks will be hosted to discuss other key findings and provide an opportunity to discuss future learning opportunities.

There's no fee to attend, but registration is required.

Hosted on November 29, 2016 from Edmonton and via live webcast, the Showcase included:
  • Numerous opportunities for participants to connect, discuss current directions and areas for collaboration.
  • A facilitated conversation on the importance of evidence-informed policy with GOA Deputy Ministers; Dr. Carl Amrhein, Health, Dr. Curtis Clarke, Education and David Morhart, Human Services. This panel was Chaired by Dr. Pierre-Gerlier Forest, Director and Palmer Chair, School of Public Policy, University of Calgary.
  • A summary of the Deputy Minister conversation from former long-time Deputy Minister, Maria David-Evans.
  • Presentations from four researchers, whose work was supported by PolicyWise for Children & Families, focusing on maternal, child and family health, Indigenous populations, child development, mental health and access to services.
  • The launch of SAGE, a secure digital platform that shares research and community data.
  • A Scientific Cafe where attendees heard evidence related to specific topic areas. These projects were also funded by PolicyWise.

SAGE - Secondary Data Use Funding Opportunity

SAGE, a data initiative at PolicyWise for Children & Families, is a data and research platform that enables the secondary use of data related to child and youth development, health and well-being. SAGE is requesting proposals for their Secondary Data Use Grant. This grant provides $5000 to five successful applications to undertake research utilizing research data that is stored and managed by SAGE.

PolicyWise seeking Administration, Research and Evaluation Associate

PolicyWise for Children & Families is recruting for an Administration, Research and Evaluation Associate. Reporting to the Chief Knowledge and Policy Officer, the Associate will contribute to ongoing research and evaluation projects conducted by PolicyWise. This is a full-time, 12 month contract position commencing January 2017. The position is based in Calgary, Alberta.

Dorothy Badry was recognized for her work educating social workers and human service professionals about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and making the disorder a women's health issue as well as a children's health issue.

PolicyWise funded researcher awarded Premier's Award of Excellence
from the University of Calgary's Faculty of Social Work 

Dorothy Badry was presented with the Premier's Award of Excellence in Education Friday, December 2, 2016 at the International Day for People with Disabilities (IDPD) celebration. Badry, PhD, RSW, received the award for the work that she has done in educating the provinces social workers and in advocating for individuals and families living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
 
"FASD is an outcome," Badry, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Work explains, "It's often an outcome of historical trauma ... of violence and abuse, of historical child abuse ...  of a legacy of inter-generational challenges within families. It is a cycle that can be prevented with information and knowledge. I think that is one of the most confounding aspects of FASD."

PAX/Triple P Project seeking Research Analyst

The PAX/Triple P Project and PEERS Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta are seeking a full-time research analyst (RA) to start immediately. The position is for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal pending salary support for an additional year. The RA will join a multidisciplinary collaborative team of investigators who are examining the influence of a school-based intervention designed to improve classroom behaviour. The PAX/Triple P Project is a randomized evaluation of the PAX and Triple P Programs in several elementary schools in Alberta.
