California Sales and Use Tax Rates 
by County, 2016

In the spirit of the holiday shopping season, December's map highlights this year's sales and use tax rates by county.  All counties within the CSU Chico Service Region maintain the standard tax rate of 7.5 percent.


  • The county with the highest sales tax rate in the state in Alameda County at 9.5 percent.
  • As a group, urban Bay Area counties hold higher sales tax rates than most other counties in the state. 
  • High sales taxes often support public transit programs. The counties of San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa each levy 0.5% to support the Bay Area Rapid Transit District on top of an additional 0.5% to support local bus and light rail services. 
  • Within the state, the population-weighted average sales tax rate is 8.4 percent.
  • Within the CSU Chico Service Region, all counties hold a sales tax rate of 7.5 percent. What a great reason to keep your dollars in the North State over this holiday shopping season!

Unemployment by County

Unemployment data is released monthly by the Employment Development Department (EDD). Below are the most recent unemployment figures for the month of October for the CSU, Chico service region published November 18th, 2016.

  • Lassen County had the lowest unemployment rate in the region at 5.5%, and was ranked 25 out of the 58 California counties.
  • Colusa County had the highest unemployment rate in the region at 10.7%, and was ranked 56 out of 58 California counties.
  • The CSU, Chico service region had an unemployment rate of 6.8%, while California had a rate of 5.3%.

New Research Assistants

Amanda Kabisch-Herzog
Amanda is a sophomore at California State University, Chico currently studying for her bachelor's degree in Economics with a minor in Applied Statistics. She is from Fairfield, California, which is located in the North Bay. She began working for the Center for Economic Development (CED) in November of 2016, and is looking forward to expanding her economic knowledge and experience through the projects she works on. In her free time, Amanda enjoys drawing, swimming, reading and playing chess.

Evan is a junior at California State University Chico working towards his B.A. in Financial Economics with a minor in International Relations. He graduated El Dorado High school in 2014 and immediately enrolled in CSU Chico for the Fall Semester of 2014. Evan began for the Center for Economic Development (CED) working in November of 2016 and has since begun working on a variety of projects. These projects, while encompassing a broad spectrum, primarily focus on analytical examination and employ techniques to help foster economic growth. In his free time, Evan enjoys rock climbing, traveling, photography, skiing and spending time with friends and family

Tania Nieto
Tania is currently a senior at California State University, Chico working towards a bachelor's degree in environmental economics. She is from Willits CA, a small rural town near the coast of Fort Bragg. Tania Began working for the Center for Economic Development (CED) in November 2016, and as the newest member to our team we look forward to all the projects she will soon be involved in. Outside of work, Tania enjoys yoga on the beach, rock-climbing, music festivals, and Sudoku puzzles.
