In this free, interactive workshop you'll learn the art, science, and skill of young tree pruning with Canopy's Program Director, Michael Hawkins, and other experienced arborists.
You'll also join a wonderful team of pruning volunteers that help maintain young trees throughout the community.

nd Annual East Palo Alto Mayor's Tree Planting and MLK Day of Service
Monday, January 16th 2017, 9am - 12pm
Jack Farrell Park, East Palo Alto
Join Canopy to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. as part of a National Day of Service. Together, we'll plant new trees and other plants and care for existing trees at Jack Farrell Park, and welcome East Palo Alto's incoming mayor with a ceremonial tree planting.

On December 21st, Canopy staff will present a draft of the Jack Farrell Park planting plan to the City of East Palo Alto's Public Works and Transportation Committee Meeting. The plan includes both trees and landscape plants, which will be planted by neighbors and residents during the MLK Day of Service (see above).
Before finalizing the plan, Canopy is seeking feedback and support from local community members. Come share your thoughts!

st Annual Palo Alto Mayor's Tree Planting and Awards Ceremony
Thursday, January 26th 2017, 5:15 - 7pm
Mitchell Park Community Center, Palo Alto
Let's celebrate! Join Canopy and friends at our 21st Annual Mayor's Tree Planting and Awards ceremony (a.k.a our annual party). A ceremonial tree planting in honor of the incoming Mayor will be followed by refreshments and mingling. We'll finish by presenting the 2017 Canopy Tree Awards as we celebrate another year growing healthy trees and healthy communities.

Highlights from the Field

Honoring veterans by nurturing nature at the VA center
On Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Canopy volunteers gathered to honor local veterans by planting new trees at the Menlo Park VA center.
Trees and nature are powerful tools for helping people heal in mind, body, and spirit. By nurturing nature on the VA campus, volunteers support veterans during their treatment and recovery at the VA center.
Several veterans from the trauma recovery program joined in the tree planting, while a group from the geriatric psychiatric unit participated as observers. Canopy volunteers planted
19 new trees and tied a yellow ribbon around each in gratitude and remembrance of all those who serve.
Special thanks to Joanna Fong, Facility Planner for the VA for coordinating and designing the tree plantings. Thanks also to James F. Cook, who has been instrumental in Canopy's Veterans Day tree planting events since 2010.

Dave Dockter shares fun facts and fall favorites on November walk
On our last 2016 tree walk, Dave Dockter gave us a chance to "Fall into color" with an autumn walk through the University South neighborhood.
Each year, Dave publishes his
list of favorite fall color trees in Palo Alto. This year, Canopy tree walk participants had a chance to share Dave's fall foliage enthusiasm on a walk through the University South neighborhood in Downtown Palo Alto.

How are California's biggest trees dealing with drought stress?
Trees all over California are feeling the effects of drought, and climatic shifts are changing forest landscapes in unpredictable ways.
Giant Sequoias are among the Golden State's most massive and longest lived tree species. How are these iconic giants responding to drought?
Scientists from a group called
Leaf to Landscape--a collaboration between UC Berkeley, USGS, the National Park Service, and the Carnegie Airborne Observatory--are seeking to answer that question.
