Rothman Family Promotes Early Literacy

SPC students thank Rothman family members Margie Green and Nancy Wygle for their support.
The Rothman Family Foundation's commitment to improving student success, particularly among learners with the fewest resources, was the impetus for their partnership with the SPC Foundation.

As part of this partnership, SPC students completing coursework in Early Childhood development were recently presented sets

of books encased in toddler-sized SPC book bags.  The students,  each of whom is currently employed in a licensed childcare center or home care environment, will share and/or distribute the books to  pre-school learners.
SPC Foundation's Theresa Afify presents student Mariam Baydoun with a book bag filled with early literacy materials.
The Rothman Family also recognized childcare employers who encourage their employees to expand their teaching skills. As students earned a Preschool Specialization Certificate, each childcare provider was presented a set of classroom literacy materials including an expanded assortment of books, manipulatives and interactive teaching tools.

Working together to improve literacy among our community's youngest learners, as exemplified through the efforts of the Rothman family, will help close the achievement gap, promote early success and build a strong foundation for life-long learning.
Leaving a Legacy
Betty Gaston  "My mother always said, 'It is not where you come from in life but where you go in life."'
For 14 years, St. Petersburg College has been fortunate to have the unwavering dedication of SPC Librarian Betty Gaston. Upon retiring in October, Ms. Gaston, who most recently worked on the SPC St. Pete/Gibbs campus, became passionate about providing students the educational opportunities that were unavailable to her parents.

"Neither of my parents finished elementary school but both were strong believers in education. In a house of four girls, we had a list of rules. At the top of the list was church on Sunday and school during the week. We all attended college with or without a scholarship."

Ms. Gaston worked with the SPC Foundation to create the Betty J. Gaston Endowed Scholarship for Nursing. "I wanted to give students the chance to go further than my mother, who, in spite of her lack of education, was a nurse's aide at the hospital in my home town of Ocala." Ms. Gaston's generosity will support the aspirations of nursing students as they work to obtain the skills and knowledge that has made the profession one of the most trusted and relied upon in our communities today.

There's More to Meat Than Meets the Eye

Within five minutes of talking with SPC Science Professor Dr. Ray Menard, even the uninitiated get excited about science. Last year, Dr. Menard was awarded an SPC Foundation Innovation Grant to lead student research to study the microbes that live on raw and cooked meat. The project provided students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in culturing meat borne bacteria, performing DNA isolations, gene amplifications and processing DNA samples for sequencing. Students also researched food borne pathogens and illnesses as well as studied how information related to those topics is represented in the media.

This fall, two SPC students, Cory Dalzell and Mason Kerr, presented the research at the Florida Branch of American Society for Microbiology Annual Meeting and took home Second Place.

"The opportunity to meet and talk with so many other like-minded, lab-oriented people was absolutely amazing," said Dalzell. "With this great experience under my belt, I am starting to make a name for myself in the scientific community and, with that, I am better prepared for jobs after graduation," added Kerr.

SPC Foundation's Innovation Grants Initiative was launched in 2011 to support the college's efforts to improve student success. The Foundation has awarded over $320,000 since the inception of the initiative.

Tarpon Springs Campus Classic Copperhead Charities Scholarship Recipient Profile
Amber Herman was one of five students selected this fall to receive the Copperhead Charities Scholarship. She is a single mother who works full-time in addition to attending classes. She will also be the first in her family to earn a college degree. "I am happy that I am setting an example for my son and hope that one day he will follow in my footsteps and earn a college degree himself," she said.

Amber will graduate in May 2017 with a B.A.S degree in Health Service Administration and is very proud of her 3.5 GPA. Ultimately, she wants to work at an addiction treatment facility specializing in adolescent care. Amber says this scholarship has helped ease worries about paying for tuition and allowed her to focus on the most important aspect of school, learning.
Valley National Bank Inspires Success
VNB Market President Charles Allcott presents a check to Frances Neu and SPC Senior Alexis Deveaux.
When First United Bank became Valley National Bank in 2015 their commitment to supporting the aspirations of local college students did not waver. Under the leadership of Market President Charles Allcott, the Bank established a scholarship in 2013 to support Pinellas and Hillsborough County students who are pursuing a credential in Financial Services, Nursing or Education at SPC. To-date nine students have benefited from the Bank's generous and continued involvement.
