2017 Conservation Treatment Grant
Application Portal Will Open 1/1/17!
The Conservation Treatment Grant Program is a partnership of the
New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN) that provides support for treatment procedures by professional conservators to aid in stabilizing and preserving objects in collections of museums, historical and cultural organizations in New York State. Applications will be accepted from non-profit 501(c)3 museums, historical organizations or other cultural institutions that own, care for and exhibit collections to the public. Grant awards will be made to institutions lacking in-house conservation staff with expertise in the area for which support is requested. Collections owned by state or federal agencies are ineligible for grant support. Organizations may submit only one request, which may involve a single object or a group of related objects, all owned by the applicant institution. Objects that interpret the history/heritage of New York State are strongly encouraged to apply for conservation. Individual grant awards will not exceed $7,500. No match required.
Please note, our application is PAPERLESS. The online application portal will open on 1/1/17 and will remain open until the deadline of 3/1/17. The Latest Session of Our Visitor Experiences Workshops Was a Hit! Don't Miss the Next One!
Our second session of the Creating Best Visitor Experiences workshop series taught by Kathryn Boardman of the Cherry Valley Group took place at the Staatsburgh State Historic Site last week on December 6
. The workshop was at capacity and was a great success. In addition to learning about some of the trends in visitor services and how to tailor existing practices to better meet them workshop attendees were also treated to behind-the-scenes tours of Mills Mansion, lively discussions among their peers and interactive role play scenarios that helped them to practice new techniques for engaging audiences and methods of meeting the needs of new visitor groups.

Path Through History Weekends will be held in two seasons:
Spring - on Father's Day weekend (June 17-18, 2017)
Fall - on Columbus Day weekend (October 7-9, 2017)
Host sites can
participate in one or both of the weekends; there is no obligation to participate in both. Watch your inboxes for more information in the upcoming months.

Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area Heritage Development Grants
The Hudson River Valley Greenway and the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area (HRVNHA) are pleased to announce the availability of $65,000 in matching grants through the 2017 Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area Heritage Development Grant Program. This annual grant program offers funding for programming, interpretation, and marketing projects that support the mutual goals of the HRVNHA and applicants. Grants will typically range from $1,000 to $5,000. Projects that include multiple partners will be eligible to receive more than $5,000. Grant program guidelines and applications are available on the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area website:

The Coby Foundation Requests Proposals from Upstate New York Museums
The Coby Foundation, the nation's only foundation dedicated to supporting projects in the textile and fashion field, is requesting proposals from New York State institutions north of Westchester and Rockland counties for exhibitons of textiles or fashions by makers from Upstate New York. Exhbitions may be historical or contemporary. The Foundation invites applications from art, history and cultural museums and similar institutions.

$1,500 Grants Available Now for Suffrage Plans
In 2017 it will be 100 years since New York State signed woman's suffrage into law, three years before the US passed the 19th Amendment. This was a milestone for the state and a transformative moment in American democracy. Equal opportunity is as important a topic today as it was when Susan B. Anthony was arrested in Rochester for attempting to vote.
This historical moment is the perfect time to frame a statewide discussion about the social, professional and political equality of women-and by extension, all citizens-in New York State. Through dialogue about our shared history and our common future, the New York Women's Suffrage Centennial (The Centennial)
will produce a statewide conversation that celebrates the accomplishments of the past while helping us become a more just and equitable society for all.

Washington's Headquarters Seeks 2017
Woman of History!
Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site is now accepting nominations for the 2017
Martha Washington Woman of History Award
. Each year, Washington's Headquarters selects a recipient for this award, given to a woman who has distinguished herself in the field of Hudson Valley history. The honor is presented at the Site's annual program,
The General's Lady
held in March, during Women's History Month.
The
Woman of History
award acknowledges Martha Washington's important place in history as a devoted patriot in support of the American Revolution and the ensuing new nation. This will be the fourteenth year the award is given, continuing the site's desire to honor women who carry on Martha Washington's legacy by sharing in their devotion to Hudson Valley history.
Nominations must be completed and received by January 9, 2017.

Student Research Awards Contest
The New York State Archives invites students to apply to the Student Research Awards Contest. The contest is open to all New York State students between grades 4-12 who use historical records in their research. The application deadline is July 1, 2017 and three awards will be presented in the fall of 2017.
All students must use historical records, as well as other primary and secondary sources, in their research. Projects must be nominated by teachers or administrators in the school attended by the student(s). Community members such as municipal historians and public librarians may also nominate students. Entries from home-schooled students are welcome.

Two Exciting New NYSCA/GHHN
Partnership
Programs Launching in January!
We are excited to announce the Creativity Incubator - a new NYSCA/GHHN Partnership Program. Launching in early 2017, the Creativity Incubator will encourage staff in museums to test out experimental interpretive approaches. Three Creativity Incubator sessions will be held in 2017 - one each in the Hudson Valley, Long Island and Central New York. As part of this hands-on experience, three museums will have their collections or permanent installations re-imagined by creative thinkers in the field and session participants. We can't wait to see what innovative ideas hatch!
Following in the footsteps of an Institute of Museum and Library Services-funded program, and in partnership with NYSCA, Greater Heritage Hudson Network (GHHN)
will offer two opportunities for collections support.
Supplies (Applications accepted in 2017):
museums can request up to $750 for the purchase of needed collections management supplies
and
Site Assessment (Applications accepted in 2018):
allows a museum to bring a collections consultant for a half-day site visit for a collections-related topic.
Guidelines and information on both the Creativity Incubator and the Collection Needs Assessment Program will be posted on our website (www.greaterhudson.org) on January 1, 2017.
The Creativity Incubator Program and the Collection Needs Assessment Program, both NYSCA/GHHN Partnership Programs, are made possible with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Historic Housekeeping Made Simple:
A GHHN Workshop
Guided by GHHN's collection care professionals, participants will learn the proper hands-on methodology of collections care by working directly with collections at four locations in the Hudson Valley. Through our train-the-trainer focus, this full-day workshop will equip attendees with the knowledge and skill sets necessary for cleaning, handling, and storing collections along with the tools to teach their volunteer base these critical skills.Offered in 4 locations- choose one:

- April 4 - Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites
- July 18, 2017 - Historical Society of Rockland County
- November 1, 2017 - Staatsburgh State Historic Site

Meet up at Southeastern!
Southeastern NY Library Resources Council is hosting a Special Interest Group meeting on January 18, 2017. The group will convene for members to discuss grant writing proposals that are in progress, just getting started, or not yet found. The discussion will be tailored to the needs of the group and may include topics related to resources for finding grants, techniques for writing grants, collaboration opportunities and referrals to grant writing services.
Participants are invited to bring their works in progress for peer-to-peer evaluation and advice. The group will be joined by librarian and archivist Eric Roth, Manager of Grants & Organizational Funding, Mohonk Preserve.
