Rev. Laurie's Message

We welcome a new church year on the first Sunday of December and bid the old year "adieu" on Sunday, November 26, the Feast of Christ the King.  Now, in this month of Thanksgiving, may we take time to give thanks for the many blessings God has given us.  The St. Catherine's community is a blessing to me and, I pray, to each of you and to our community.  Our theme of "Journey to Generosity" invites us to consider how we will support St. Catherine's ministries with each other and with the people of South Reno. With grateful hearts, let us recommit to God's work around us and among us.

As I take some Sabbath time away and reflect on our life together, I consider all that each of you contributes to God's mission for St. Catherine's.  You are each a blessing.  From the beginning of our time together, you have been willing to treat each other with love and respect--to rejoice together at God's Grace and to engage each other when there was something difficult. You have mirrored a healthy community.  For that I am eternally grateful.  You are a blessing.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!  God is good and faithful.

Morning Prayer, Ingathering, and Blessing: Nov. 19

Please come and participate with Rev. Sharon, Bob and Judy in prayer at our Morning Prayer service on November 19.  We encourage you to support our laity as they lead us in prayer.  We will also have a Thanksgiving potluck between services at 10:00 and the ingathering and blessing of our pledged contributions to support the ministry of St. Catherine's at both services.

Financial Report from our Treasurer

By Sally Dickinson

I wanted to share some of the insights I gleaned at our recent statewide Diocesan convention held at the Circus Circus in October.  From the stories told by other parishes' treasurers, St. Catherine's is in great shape financially.  We have checks and balances in place to ensure that all monies received and spent are properly documented and accounted for.  We have been saving for our move for a number of years and are one of the few parishes that have a healthy savings account.

Our prior treasurers did a wonderful job setting up and organizing our accounts and keeping records so it was easy for me to step in as Treasurer.  We are also one the few parishes in the Diocese that have always paid our asking on time and have never been in arrears.

We will be preparing our 2018 budget in December.  This year we had a deficit budget of $16,000 for 2017 due to our move to our new church which was a 5x increase in our rent.   For 10 years we saved for this move and the deficit budget was not unexpected.  It looks like we will be close to that number as we come to the end of year.  The approved budget will be presented at our January 2018 Annual Meeting.

As our Stewardship campaign concludes in November, I hope, that as you consider your pledge, you might find that you can increase your pledge for 2018 or even consider pledging for the first time.  Your support is vital to our missions of outreach, community service and, most important, our worship services.

If you would like more information or want to see our financial reports please contact me at [email protected].

'Think Blue' this November

By Georgia Tachoires, Diocese of Nevada UTO Coordinator

Little blue boxes are showing up in the entry area of St.Catherine's.  One or more are yours!  Through your generous offerings, they are the way to support the United Thank Offering (UTO). The deadline for submission of funds to the UTO office is mid-December.  Therefore, we would like to use the start of the holiday season to show our support of this wonderful national program for the Episcopal Church.  As you shop throughout the season, put your change, or spare bills, in the box. Keep the box in an obvious, convenient place and prepare to return it to St, Catherine's no later than Sunday, November 26

Nevada has been blessed with four generous grants over the past seven years. Now, it is our turn to highly support this important fund. The United Thank Offering is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through UTO, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. UTO is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the monies to support missions and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and Provinces of the Anglican Communion.

AA Group Welcomed at St. Catherine's

Starting on November 15, there will be an AA group meeting at St. Catherine's every Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
This is in keeping with our desire to share our building with other ministries who are in need of meeting space.

AA has a very long history with the Episcopal Church, dating back to its inception by one of its founders, an Episcopal priest.  This is a men's group.  If you are interested in more information, please contact Eric at 559-347-4288.  If you know someone for whom this outreach would be helpful, please feel free to contact Eric.  There is also a women's group that meets on Wednesday evenings at the South Reno United Methodist Church.

St. Nick's Helpers
St. Nick's Helpers

By Sally Dickinson

This month we will be getting names of students who attend Double Diamond Elementary school, our Partner in Education school, who will need our help this Christmas.  These are families that the counselors feel are in the greatest need.  I will be putting up their ages and gift wish on the bulletin board in our lobby.  Please feel free to take one or more, and note on our list which St. Nick tree you have taken.  We will also be taking monetary donations so that we could provide a Winco gift card to each family which will enable them to buy food for their holiday meals.

Deadline for bringing in your wrapped gift is December 10th.  This will allow us enough time to get the gifts to Double Diamond for distribution or to deliver the gifts ourselves.  If you are interested in being part of this ministry (organizing and delivering) or have any questions, please contact Sally Dickinson at  [email protected]  or  775.853.7850
