Our Perspective
Spotlight: Augusta County's Bounty

Food is a vital part of our lives - from sustenance to celebration, we use food to enrich our bodies, our moods and our days. Even this week, we'll spice up our work week and hope to win the County chili cook-off with our three-meat chili! Don't tell anyone, but bacon is the secret.

Food is all around us, and that of course, is never more apparent than at Thanksgiving time. We have opportunities to prepare turkeys pastured in our rolling hills and side dishes made from vegetables grown just miles away. Knowing the abundance of food available in this area, we constantly give thanks for those who grow what sustains us - our farmers. Fields of Gold brings those farmers to the forefront with its most recent video. Take a minute and learn more about those who make it all possible.

If you're a local food fan or farmer yourself, the upcoming Farm to Table Conference will be held at Blue Ridge Community College from December 6-7. Register here, and take an educational and networking opportunity to grow the strength of agriculture in this area.

After all the eating and education, an even better picture of the effect of agriculture in our area will be seen when the 2017 USDA Census of Agriculture numbers are released in December. Anecdotally, we know agriculture is huge in this area, but having quantifiable numbers proves our case.

Here's to the upcoming holidays, and the special part food plays in your celebrations!
