Christmas Creep! Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

A Note From Pastor Linda

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ~Isaiah 9.6

Dear Friends,

Today I write with a heavy heart. What exactly is going on in our world; the world that God so loves? Shootings, abuse, fake news, hate crimes... I do not even want to open up my newsfeeds and social media or turn on the TV and radio. Why, Lord, why?
I had planned on writing about Stewardship, as you will be receiving a letter and Giving Card from me this week in the USPO mail; an opportunity to support your family with an ask to make a financial commitment for the work of Jesus in the world... and then something happened. While in Chicago this past week, I noticed that StarBucks started playing Christmas music and their holiday cups and seasonal drinks have returned. Next, the radio station I was listening to was abuzz with "Christmas Creep"- asking its listeners about the advent of Christmas, if they liked or did not like Christmas on the heals of Halloween. I have always been one to WAIT for Christmas- but that is when our world and Christmas collided upon my heart.
This year I think we NEED Christmas early. We need to be reminded of Jesus, the newborn King; named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of PEACE. Not only do we need to be reminded, we, the church, need to proclaim it!
That's when it all came together for me. I MUST support my Hosanna, my church home, and I must make it a priority. I must do this because the church is one place where we teach HOPE and PEACE and LOVE. It is the place where we gather to support each other in our high's and our low's. It is the place where we worship and we are reminded of our worth. It is the place of gathering- of people gathering to sing and to live and to love and to serve.
And so this year I am all about Christmas Creep as it reminds me that in the midst of the darkness- there is light, a light that no darkness will ever overcome. Thanks be to God!
So join me- in singing and proclaiming Christmas. Open that letter and join me in making a financial commitment to support Hosanna- a place to be church together.

THANK YOU to our Fall Clean-Up Volunteers

(A note from Kathy Okeson and all of us here at Hosanna)
We definitely have people who care deeply for God's creation at Hosanna! When I got there at 8 am, the grounds all covered by snow, there were garden clippings laid out nicely along the sidewalk, road into the circle area, as well as a few other places.  Some very dedicated individual (s) had been there and cut down the lower gardens, as well as the eastern parking lot garden on top,  before the snow came yesterday, and left the clippings so that they could easily be picked up today.  Well, easily as can be when covered with heavy wet snow! But, no big deal!

We  had three of us working and piled up the clippings before 9 am, when I was leaving for Yoga.  Then, another couple showed up with a trailer, and they were able to load the piles and dispose of them, most likely the compost site in FL.  They also cut down the remaining gardens at the steps, western garden in the parking lot, and the garden by the steps leading to the lower parking lot!  All of the garden clippings were also cleaned up!

I'm not sure who has been so kind to do all of the work on their own, but we, at Hosanna, as well as the GET, are so very thankful for the people who care so deeply for our grounds and gardens.

Sunday, November 12

Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra will be performing at Hosanna Lutheran Church on November 12, 2017 at 4pm in the Great Hall. WCO is an arts organization that is unique in the Twin Cities. Each member is a volunteer, including the directors, and each is dedicated to helping those in need. Their primary mission is to contribute to food shelves in the areas where they perform, through proceeds of freewill offerings taken at their concerts. Members also enjoy sharing great music with their audiences, and most of them have had extensive experience in school, community and church musical groups. Proceeds of the freewill offerings taken at concerts are donated to charity, primarily food shelf programs. Since 1985, WCO has received more than $495,500 in offerings at their concerts, which is enough money to buy over 2,495,500 meals. The group has raised funds for flood relief and several hospices, in addition to food shelves.

The cohort culminates in a trip to Atlanta where we will meet with local faith and nonprofit leaders, visit landmarks of the civil rights movement, share communal meals, and wrestle with what it means to live in this time, and reflect on how God is calling us to work for racial justice.
