Alamo Colleges District -Palo Alto College Nets $1.3 Million Grant
|

| Alamo Colleges District - Palo Alto College is the only two-year college in Texas to receive a federal TRIO Upward Bound grant. |
Alamo Colleges District - Palo Alto College (PAC) has been awarded a five year, $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science program to help high school students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science. PAC is one of only seven new Upward Bound program awards - and the only two-year college - funded in Texas this year.
Effective in the 2017-2018 academic year, the Upward Bound program will provide up to 60 East Central High School students each year with math and science-related academic instruction, tutoring, and advising; information on financial aid programs; assistance in completing financial aid applications; financial literacy; and support in applying for college enrollment.
The TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students and encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science professions.

Alamo Colleges District Awarded $100,000 Grant
To Train Transitioning Military for Civilian Jobs

| The Alamo Colleges District has been awarded $100,000 to train transitioning military service members for civilian jobs at no cost. |

The Alamo Colleges District has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to create a Skills for Transition Program (STP) to train transitioning military service members for civilian jobs in high-demand fields, at no cost to the service members. Military service members who are preparing to separate from service within six months or who have been discharged within the previous six months, and are planning to remain in Texas, are eligible. The Alamo Colleges District is working with Joint Base San Antonio to recruit service members for the program.
Service members who qualify can receive training to become a heavy equipment operator, certified logistics associate, solar power installer, machinist, welder or information technology specialist. To participate, eligible service members are required to obtain career counseling in order to determine their suitability for specific training; to receive permission from their commanding officer (if still on active duty); and to have received a discharge other than dishonorable. Separated service members must have a DD-214.
The TWC Skills for Transition program is designed to help the more than 20,000 service members in Texas who transition to civilian life each year. Currently, close to 30,000 veterans are searching for employment in Texas. The STP program is part of the Texas Operation Welcome Home program coordinated by the Office of the Governor, TWC, the Texas Veterans Commission and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Alamo Colleges District -San Antonio College Program Honors Local Leaders
Local community leaders were honored for their service to the city and Alamo Colleges District - San Antonio College (SAC) during the Leadership/Partnership Awards ceremony hosted by the college's Public Administration program. Those recognized were:
* Adrianna Arredondo - Travis Early College High School Principal
* Lori Steward - City of San Antonio Human Resources Director
* Reyna Torres Mendivil - Consul General of Mexico
* Val Calvert - Chair of the SAC Business Department
* Roberto Zarate - Trustee, Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees
Zarate was also the guest speaker at the ceremony. In addition, Zina Tedford was recognized as Outstanding Public Administration graduate.
The Leadership/Partnership Awards Ceremony included testimonials from former students as well as two current students - one from Mexico and the other from France - who are working towards leadership certification in the program.
Two $500 scholarships were also awarded during the ceremony to SAC students Bianca Wilkins and Valerie E. Cardenas.
