Icons of Depth & Complexity -

Engaging Student Thinking

Do you want to challenge students to think with more depth & complexity? Gifted students require regular opportunities to become engaged with learning activities that require this type of thinking. In Teaching Gifted Kids in Today's Classroom (2012, p. 160), Susan Winebrenner defines depth as a process of thought that seeks generalizations and universal principles. Students analyze language of the discipline, details, patterns, rules, trends, big ideas, ethical dilemmas, and percolate unanswered questions. Complexity is the quality or process of thinking that combines many ideas or parts: multiple perspectives, and change over time and across disciplines.

Southwest Montana School Services is proud to offer this Gifted & Talented workshop FREE OF CHARGE, led by our instructor Dianne Fowler. In this workshop the Kaplan Icons of Depth and Complexity will be presented as a critical thinking tool to help K-12 teachers incorporate depth and complexity into curriculum content to extend thinking and rigor best matching gifted student needs. Icon products and resources will be shared. This workshop has been well received by teachers valuing immediate takeaways to use in their classrooms.
