Little River May 5k |
Every year in May a group of runners compete in this small, unchanged, little fishing village to race the Little River May 5k. The race begins with new and old friends meeting under the 2 to 3 hundred year old oak trees sharing stories and discussing injuries, weather, and bling.
The 5k is an old sentimental favorite because it has fast runners, not a lot of glamour, and a few little hills that make runners laugh or cry. For many it is a easy morning run through the neighborhood, and for others it is a run as fast as you can for 3.1 miles with everything you got!
At the end, the leaders go back and run the other racers across the finish line.
A great little race, in a sleepy little town, were afterwards, the runners go and eat breakfast together and talk about injuries, weather, AND BLING!
Yes, 5k's are tough...

Knock on Wood Ultra Stories |
"Why would you want to run 31 miles?" people have asked me. So I'll try to explain. I'm not a fast runner which is why I think I don't enjoy 5k's. Usually the goal is to run as fast as you can, or run faster than you would normally run, for a short period of time. I have discovered that I love trail running. I really enjoy running around in the woods for hours. I'm happy that my aging body that I abused for years allows me to do it. It's my reset button, my therapy, my alone time. It's also a challenge and a huge step outside of my comfort zone that I lived in for so long. - Julie Walsh, GSRC Member, Knock on Wood 50k Finisher and Ultramarathoner
"100 miles is really freaking hard." - Heather Hart, GSRC Member "Ultra running is gross." - Geoffrey Hart, GSRC Member
"I randomly found this hanging in the house a few days after completing my first 50k. I read it as a sign, both literally and figuratively." - Holly Hollo, GSRC Member, 50k Knock on Wood finisher and ultramarathoner
During the middle of his 50k Knock on Wood race, Paul Walker stopped running and tended to a medical emergency of a runner who went down. The man's heart had stopped and, and Paul was able to take charge of the situation, restart the man's heart, and save his life. Many of our GSRC members accomplished some amazing feats this weekend, but Paul's quick thinking and training saved a man's life.
More about the man Paul saved: From Upstate Ultras Facebook page: Bryan Bedenbaugh update: He is being released from the hospital! After going through some medical tests the culprit was found and addressed. The doctor's said this could have happened anywhere but he was lucky to have near an AED and medical professionals when it happened. Bryan and Paul Walker will be getting the next several race entries on the house!

"Completing the 50k this past weekend was extremely challenging for me. I am so proud of everyone who accomplished this goal but even more proud to say I did it and got to do it with my husband and son (Chris and Caden)! I would definitely recommend ultra running to anyone who is looking for that next challenge!" - Kelly Livingston, 50k Knock on Wood finisher and ultramarathoner
