A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 11 06 17

P arents and Guardians,

I hope you and your student enjoyed the extra hour of sleep this weekend. My kids love the time change in the fall, but I must admit I don't like it getting dark earlier.

Congratulations to our Boys' Cross Country Team for repeating as 5A State Champions. The team had another dominant year as they finished undefeated for the season. More details about the Leopards performance at the state meet can be found here.

On Tuesday, LHS students will attend a presentation by AIM for Success as part of our ongoing student programming around making healthy choices. Their program '"Focus on Success" looks at the positive and negative aspects of technology along with the dangers of sexting and pornography. Ultimately, students will be encouraged to pursue behaviors to help foster healthy relationships.

Please take a few moments to review the information below about upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

Lovejoy Letter Campaign - Deadline is Friday!
We need your help for an upcoming opportunity to let our teachers and staff know how much our Lovejoy ISD community values them and what an impact each one has on our children! The district provides an extra check for teachers the day before Thanksgiving break. In addition to those checks, again this year we would love to include a hand written letter from Lovejoy ISD families expressing gratitude and appreciation to each teacher and staff on your campus. Letters should simply be a #shortandsweet note of thanks that expresses how much #weloveourteachers.

We would be so grateful if you could write a letter or letter(s) to any teacher or teacher(s)/staff, either current or past, that have been valuable to your child(ren)'s educational experience. Please clearly label the envelope with the staff/teacher's name and LLC (Lovejoy Letter Campaign) and return the letter to the front office by Friday November 10th.

The letter campaign has become such a meaningful tradition. We really appreciate the time and effort your contributions will make again to this year's letter campaign.

Lovejoy High School Theatre Presents Almost, Maine: November 9 and 11
Prepare to fall in love with Lovejoy High School Theatre's second fall show of the year with the critically acclaimed play Almost, Maine to be presented on November 9th and 11th at 7:00 PM in the new LHS Black Box Theatre. We hope you will join us for this inaugural performance in this beautiful space.  Tickets will be on sale beginning Sunday, November 5th through the Fine Arts Box Office . Tickets are $7 for students, seniors, and staff, and are $10 for adults.

It's love. But not quite.

Welcome to the town of Almost, Maine: where everything almost happens the way it should. It's almost not in the United States, it almost doesn't exist. Its residents never really got around to getting organized, so it's just... "Almost."

On one cold, clear Friday night in the middle of winter, Almost, Maine tells nine separate stories of love and how it can fall apart or be put back together. Knees are bruised, hearts are broken, and love is lost, found, and confounded. With a perfect combination of laughter, love, and awkward run-ins with exes, Almost, Maine epitomizes the human relationships in surprising, poignant, and often hilarious ways.

Take a journey through Almost, Maine, a performance suitable for adults through middle schoolers that features lovable characters such as Pete (played by Freshman, Landon Kerr) and his girlfriend Ginette (Junior, Riley Bergwall), who have only dated for a little while; longtime boyfriend Lendall (Junior, Alec Welhouse) and girlfriend Gayle (Senior, Katherine Carter); the tough woman Rhonda (Senior, Jessica Luce) and her not-so-tough admirer Dave (Sophomore, Bryce Fuller).

Almost, Maine is a funny and moving play that families will most certainly love.

AIM for Success - Tomorrow
AIM for Success is presenting information to our students on November 7th with the program entitled "Focus on Success." Today's technology brings a host of opportunities to our young people - opportunities to make a positive difference in the world, and at the same time, opportunities to greatly harm themselves and others. This practical program looks at the rewards and the dangers of technology- including sexting and pornography. A focus on healthy relationships- both in person and online- gives students freedom to reach their dreams and goals.

School Bus Safety Practices
We would like to remind everyone of the following school bus safety practices:

*When you see a school bus, assume children will be in the area, and take extra care: leave lots of space around the bus.

*When the bus turns on its flashing yellow lights, the bus is either preparing to stop at a railroad crossing or preparing to stop to pick up or drop off children.  Please slow down and prepare to stop.

*When the bus turns on its flashing red lights traffic must stop in both directions.  Never pass a school bus with flashing red lights.

Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep our students safe.

Supporting LHS Students through Senior Project Judging
It is difficult to believe how quickly the school year is flying by. At the high school, this means that some LHS Seniors are nearing the time for their Senior Project Presentations.

Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.

We want to extend to you the invitation to share in this experience as a Senior Project Judge. Presentations will take place at Lovejoy High School on November 14th, December 6th, January 18th, February 16th and March 7th. Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Judges training begins at 5:30 p.m. for those who have never judged Senior Project presentations. Those who judged in past years may arrive at 6 p.m. A light meal is served each night.
