December 27, 2016

As we venture towards a new year, I can't help but wonder... where did 2016 go? It seems like just yesterday I was dreaming of the adventures I would take in 2016. Did you take the time in 2016 to do amazing things? Did you see the wonders of the world?

This week, our agents chose Alaska as our destination for the e-newsletter. It's the last 'wild' frontier in the US. Small ship cruises are the best way to visit - the small ships can maneuver close to shore in search of wildlife sightings, and the Captains are experienced in watching for whale pods and other animals. And the ships can get right up next to a glacier in hops of hearing a glacier calve.

Port-of-Call Spotlight
Petersburg, Alaska
On the north end of Mitkof Island, where the Frederick Sound meets the Wrangell Narrows, lies the small town of Petersburg, or "Little Norway". The first European settler of the island, Norwegian Peter Buschmann, built a cannery, sawmill, docks and early town structures. The town was named for him and has since thrived as a fishing port.

Petersburg has created a high-quality tourist experience. Large ships cannot get there, so the town doesn't get overloaded by too many people at once, like Juneau, Sitka or Ketchikan.

Travelers who visit in May can experience Petersburg's Little Norway Festival. To learn more about Petersburg's fishing history, visit the Clausen Memorial Museum. The heart of Petersburg is Sing Lee Alley and the Sons of Norway Hall. Visit thru the summer to see Norwegian dancers and a buffet of Norwegian specialties.
