HISTORY ON THE BRICKS, FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS
Courtesy of The North Fort Worth Historical Society
In 1892, Boston financier Greenlief Simpson visited the Fort Worth Union Stockyards and at the time of his visit a railroad washout had stranded several thousand head of cattle at the yards. "This is some market!" Simpson told his lawyer, W.C. Johnson. It is unknown whether Simpson ever learned the reason for so many cattle that day but, impressed by the magnitude of the market, Simpson decided to buy into the stockyards and he and several of his friends and investors, including Louville Niles of Boston, created The Fort Worth Stockyards Company.  They then purchased the Fort Worth Union Stockyards and the Fort Worth Packing company from the local owners.
During the early years the Stockyards area was not part of the Fort Worth city limits. In 1902 it was incorporated and became North Fort Worth.

Then in 1911 it was incorporated again as Niles City until August of 1923 when it was annexed by the city of Fort Worth.

Although they had the investors and the business expertise of Simpson, Niles and others, they struggled with their company for nearly a decade. The economic panic of 1893 and the Texas cattlemen's distrust of eastern outsiders hurt their business. The ranchers preferred to ship their cattle to Kansas City and St. Louis. Simpson decided to attend the convention of the Cattle Raisers of Texas (now the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association) and urged the cattlemen to ship to Fort Worth. He also promised to pay fifty cents per head more than what they could get in Kansas City.

The Stockyards are a wonderful recognition of Cattlemen and Cowboys steeped in the tradition  of the American West; a place today doing primarily the same thing we were doing over 100 years ago.
Cattle drives, rodeo, steam train, honky tonks, great places to shop and eat and more.

Thank you for taking the time to support our history and culture.

Sincerely,

Fort Worth Stockyards
