You're never too old to learn something new...

Hinde Silver started playing recorder when she was eight years old, traveling by bus to a music camp in White Plains, New York. Her first year, the director handed her a recorder, and that was her instrument for the summer. She moved from recorder, to clarinet and finally to oboe, but she always enjoyed the sound of a recorder. Hinde spent her working years as a cardiac nurse and didn't find the time for playing music.

Thanks to generous donors like you, the ARS was able to help Hinde
fall in love with the recorder all over again.

On her retirement to Arizona, Hinde connected with the local ARS chapter and started playing recorder again and became an active member of the local chapter. Arizona is a big place, and chapter members are scattered throughout the area. After reading an ARS Nova email article that talked about the availability of ARS scholarships, Hinde decided that going to the San Francisco Early Music Society Medieval/Renaissance workshop would spark up her playing, but the expense would be difficult for someone on a retirement income.

Member contributions to the ARS helped us to send Hinde for a week of recorder instruction not available to her locally.

Hinde was thrilled with the opportunity to play with mixed consorts, including voice, sackbuts, dulcians and viols. The workshop site is a priory in Oakland, California where the concerts are held in a chapel surrounded by stained glass, beautiful hardwood beams and marble floors. The acoustics are stunning. Hinde spent the week playing recorder and says that the technique class was magical. It helped her learn renaissance rhythms, switching from one tempo to another, refined her tonguing technique, and allowed her to participate in a medieval music class. She wishes everyone could have this experience and sends her thanks to the ARS for making it possible.
