A's players prepare to greet Yonder Alonso in the bottom of the 12th inning after their All-Star first baseman smacked his 22nd home run for a 6-5 walk-off win over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon. Speedy Giants center fielder Denard Span (2) legged out a double and arrived ahead of the off-line throw snagged by Padres shortstop Allen Cordoba (17) in the first inning of their game on Sunday, July 23. Span would later score on a single by Buster Posey but the Giants fell this day to San Diego, 5-2. To view a full photo album, visit our Facebook Page and be sure to LIKE us. Photo by Rich Yee. |

San Francisco Giants Update

In attendance at the Giants vs. Padres game on Sunday, July 23 was 94-year-old Brigadier General Charles "Chuck" Yeager, a United States Air Force officer and record-setting test pilot. San Francisco Giants Update:
Sunday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers was one of the toughest losses of the season, with the bullpen blowing two saves before the Dodgers walked-off in the bottom of the 11
th
inning. The win clinched the series sweep for the Dodgers, who improved to an MLB-best 74-31 record. The Giants, meanwhile, are headed in the opposite direction, owning the second-worst record in the National League. For the week the Giants went 2-4, taking two out of three against the Pittsburgh Pirates before being swept in Southern California. In roster news, third baseman Eduardo Nunez was traded to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for two Minor League pitchers. Interestingly, the Giants acquired third baseman Pablo Sandoval a week before the trade, after he was waived from the Red Sox, possibly in preparation of losing Nunez. While Sandoval is currently in Sacramento with the Triple-A River Cats, it is possible that he will see playing time at the big league level before the season is over. This week the Giants have a four-game set against the Oakland Athletics before facing the Arizona Diamondbacks at home.

Oakland A's

th inning on an

|
The A's Rajai Davis hit a two-run home run in the bottom of ninth inning, capping off a four-hit game, and sending the A's home with a 5-4 walk-off win over the Twins on Saturday evening at the Coliseum. The victory also snapped the A's five-game losing streak.
|
|
|
Saturday evening's Oakland A's win over the visiting Minnesota Twins brought on another celebration in the form of Bob Melvin's 1,000th career victory as a MLB manager. Melvin, a Bay Area native, has coached for 14 years in the big leagues and has been the Oakland A's skipper since 2011. Melvin's record with the A's rests at 507 wins, 506 losses.
|
Oakland Athletics Update:
In what looked like an unproductive offensive week for the A's, the team was able to flip the script over the weekend with back-to-back walk-offs against the Minnesota Twins. The Athletics were on a five-game losing streak entering Saturday, but the two wins were worth the wait. Saturday the Athletics entered the eighth inning down by two runs before getting back to what's worked for them all season -- the long ball. Third baseman Matt Chapman hit a solo shot in the eighth, cutting the deficit to one run before Rajai Davis ended it with a two-run homer in the ninth. Sunday afternoon's game followed the same script, as Chapman tied the game in the eighth inning with a two-run double. This time, All-Star Yonder Alonso ended it in dramatic fashion with a homer in the bottom of the 12
th
inning. This marked the eighth and ninth walk-off wins for the team this season, placing them with the most in the America League. This week, the Athletics will face the struggling Giants before heading south to take on the Los Angeles Angels. The MLB trade deadline is Monday at 1 p.m., PST, so be on the lookout for a possible deal involving starting pitcher Sonny Gray.

La Famiglia
Futsal Club
By Nick Krahnke
|
We all love to play the game and believe it can be a great vehicle for peace, unity,
diversity, community, and positive change not just in the Bay Area,
but all across the nation and world.
--Eric Angell and Johnny Carrera, LFFC '17
La Famiglia Futsal Club (LFFC) was a lifelong dream that became a reality.
LFFC is a professional futsal club in Redwood City, Calif. The word 'famiglia' means 'family' in Italian, and in fact, the players who are the founders of LFFC are brothers and cousins!
|

LFFC competes in two different professional leagues. They play in the Major League Futsal (MLF) and the National Association of Professional Leagues (NAPEL). Since LFFC is a professional club, they have numerous sponsors to help fund the team.
For those unfamiliar with futsal, here is a brief overview of the game: Futsal has different rules than traditional soccer. The ball is smaller and heavier, compared to a normal soccer ball, and it is five-versus-five players on the court. The game is quick, with substitutions allowed on the fly, played in two 20-minute periods.
Since futsal is a niche sport in the United States, players often live dual lives to sustain their families. When they are not playing games, most coach at community youth clubs, perform manual labor or work in the technology industry... talk about commitment!

Others have played college soccer and all have strong, competitive youth club backgrounds from adolescence. Every player on a futsal team has also competed at a high level on the soccer pitch as well. A few members have played professionally overseas, as well as in the United States.
LFFC has helped keep youth players educated about playing futsal, which in return, has allowed the fast-paced game to grow more popular within the United States and the rest of the world. LFFC won a championship last season and are currently on their journey to the Nationals this season, to pursue more hardware!
