Dear Friends:
We're Growing Up!
As we begin our 20th anniversary year this fall, we have some exciting news to share about the growth of our organization.
Our small (but mighty) staff has increase to accommodate a new member! Rebekka Nickman, who has been an intern and a part-time staffer with the collaborative since September 2016 is now joining our team full-time as the new Program Manager.
Rebekka will now be the primary contact for the Arts and Humanities for Every Student (AHFES) and Professional Development Programs. In this capacity she will serve as the liaison between the DC public and public charter schools and the DC Collaborative's cultural institution members to ensure the best possible field-trip experiences for students, and continued learning for educators.
To many of you, Rebekka may already be a familiar face, but here are some fun facts you may not know about her:
- She received a Bachelor's of Music degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- While in college, she interned at the Kennedy Center
- She is an expert crossword puzzle solver
As you all know, Tracey Wyton recently celebrated her 5-year anniversary with the DC Collaborative. For her 6th year she is taking on some new responsibilities as the Director of Programs and Community Engagement. In this capacity she will oversee the Collaborative's Membership Services and Collective Impact Initiatives and programs.
We are so excited to be able to expand our reach in the community and to further our #CollaborativeEffect.

The DC Collaborative is excited to kick of its 20th year! July is our Membership Enrollment month. This is a perfect time for members to commit to continuing our work and for new organizations
join our flourishing arts and humanities education community!
As an active member,
you will receive current communications, a feature page on our website,
invitations to our quarterly member meetings, networking events, round-table discussions, and committee meetings, along with being eligible to apply to be part of the AHFES and PD

Member Benefits:
- Network: Gain access to our member directory. Build relationships with other organizations through member meetings and events, professional development for staff, and other networking opportunities. Many new programs and projects have been created as a result of membership networking.
- Programming: Gain access to DC Public and Public Charter Schools to assist your organization in connecting equitably to students through the DC Collaborative's Arts and Humanities for Every Student, (AHFES) and Professional Development Initiatives. Through our AHFES and PD programs you will receive:
- Outreach: coordinated scheduling, field-trip registration lottery system, PD registration system, in-school placement, reservation tracking and coordination, timely teacher reminders, post-experience survey and analysis, and contracting with transportation vendors
- Technical assistance in connecting to DCPS and DC Public Charter School curricular priorities
- Contacts through an active network of teachers and administrators at each school
- Up-to-date data on DCPS and DC Public Charter Schools
- Professional Development: Attend and offer professional development workshops, webinars and roundtables for member organization staff.
- Collective Impact: Join a cross-sector network of cultural institutions, government agencies, funders, schools, and families working jointly to impact arts and humanities education in the District. Help define shared language and measurements for our entire community. Contribute to our collective impact and data collection initiatives and our community calendar.
- Community of Practice: Join the Collaborative's clearinghouse of arts and humanities education resources. Contribute to the field by evaluating the quality and equity of arts and humanities education programming offered in the District by participating in the DC Collaborative's Programming Committee.
- Advocacy: Be heard as a part of a collective voice with other arts and humanities education stakeholders in advancing arts and humanities education in Washington, DC, including city-wide policies and planning. Through our membership convenings, stay connected to local and national government officials and advocacy organizations.
- Communications and Resources: Receive monthly newsletters and other messaging regarding relevant and up-to-date information on arts education in DC schools and across the nation. Receive information about funding opportunities for your education programs.
- Connect and Share: Feature your organization and its programs on a database of DC arts and humanities education resources. NEW this year! All members will have a "Member Feature Page" on the DC Collaborative website with direct links to your website. Share your organization's story by featuring your organization's education programs on our Story Bank Blog and learn about other members.
Member Roles/Responsibilities:
- Actively contribute to our professional network which works to improve the arts and humanities education community of practice.
- Attend the Annual Membership Meeting and at least one of the three General Meetings each year. Consider contributing to our Membership, Programming and Special Events committees.
- Assist in our Member Mapping Initiative and other Collective Impact efforts by gathering and providing your organization's annual data.
- Provide necessary information about your organization and your organization's education initiatives to be added to our member directory and feature pages.
- Evaluate the quality of arts and humanities education programming offered by our members by ensuring completion of student surveys, observing field-trips, and providing feedback.
- Build awareness of, and advocate for arts and humanities education initiatives in the District (as much as is allowable by your organization).
- Pay annual dues.
- Include the following language in your organization's annual report: "[Name of your organization] is a member of the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative."
- Include the DC Collaborative logo on your organization's website and print materials where applicable.
Annual Dues:
- Institutional Budget 1 million and above - Annual Dues $750
- Institutional Budget 500K to 999K - Annual Dues $500
- Institutional Budget 250K-499K - Annual Dues $250
- Institutional Budget 249K and under - Annual Dues $100
- Individual Practitioner/Teaching Artist Membership - $50 (For those who are part of an organization, institutional dues are recommended to take advantage of full benefits of institutional membership.)

Connecting to Curriculum Session for Cultural Institution Members
with DCPS Arts, ELA and Social Studies

The Arts and Humanities for Every Student (AHFES) program
ensures equitable access to educational programming at cultural institutions in the DC area.
The AHFES online lottery opens Monday, September 11th
and is
open to all DC public and public charter schools.
Learn more about the AHFES program by attending our AHFES orientation! Educators may peruse the 2017-2018 AHFES and Professional Development (PD) offerings and other member programs in the Member Fair and attend the AHFES orientation to learn more about the program and go over policies and procedures.
Attending an AHFES orientation is MANDATORY for schools wishing to participate in the 2017-2018 AHFES and PD programs.**

2017-2018 AHFES Application Review
This last month, our Programming and Membership Committees reviewed our Members' educational programs submitted for inclusion in the
2017-2018 Arts and Humanities for Every Student (AHFES) Program.
This meeting was an informal peer-led panel review. The Programming Committee developed rubrics that helped us look at the quality of the experience and the curricular connections.
Peer reviewers
made recommendations based on the program applications of other members. A big thank you! to all 20 of our peer reviewers for joining us during the summer for our AHFES program review!

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017, the DC Collaborative is partnering with all four DC Whole Foods Market locations (Tenleytown, NW, P
Street NW, Foggy Bottom NW, and H Street NE-- all day and night -- for a
Whole Foods Market Community Giving Day
. During this time, 5% of each store's daily profits (including catering sales!) will go directly to our AHFES Fund to provide field-trip transportation for DCPS and DCPCS students!
This AHFES shopping day is for OUR ENTIRE community.
We encourage all members to get out and represent at the Whole Foods Market location nearest to you. Come volunteer and raise awareness about your arts and humanities education programs. Shop and place catering orders to support!
More details in the upcoming weeks how you can participate and directly support us on Wednesday, September 20th to raise more funds that will benefit your organizations and schools. The DC Collaborative believes that the arts and humanities-inclusive of music, visual arts, media arts, theater, dance, and literary arts-are central to the education of every student. A community-based partnership organization, now more than 100 members strong, the DC Collaborative works to promote quality arts and humanities education for all DC public and public charter schools. Working with our partners, the DC Collaborative produces such exemplary programs as Arts and Humanities for Every Student and Professional Development initiatives.
Interns are involved in providing clerical and logistical support to DC Collaborative staff, as pertaining to our programmatic, communications, membership, and developmental needs, as well as working to support the daily activities necessary to manage a small non-profit. Internships can be specialized in the following areas or any combination thereof:
DEVELOPMENT
●
Conduct preliminary research on funding leads and contribute to prospective outreach list.
●
Generate solicitations and donor correspondence on behalf of the DC Collaborative.
●
Maintain electronic archives of development correspondence and activities.
●
Assist with grant writing and respond to requests for proposals.
●
Assist in preparing reports for funders; includes gathering and submission of financial information and budgets.
●
Process Member dues invoicing and assist with outreach efforts.
●
Other duties as assigned.
COMMUNICATIONS
●
Assist with responding to requests for information, ensuring accurate and timely communications
●
Research, design, compose, edit, and proofread materials.
●
Assist with creation of e-newsletter, press releases, and other online communications.
●
Responsible for taking, editing, and distributing meeting notes.
●
Conduct research on arts, humanities, and education related trends. Distribute articles and information related to DC Collaborative areas of interest on various media platforms.
●
Develop content for our Story Bank Blog.
●
Other duties as assigned.
PROGRAMMING
●
Assist with online registration and database maintenance for the Arts and Humanities for Every Student (AHFES) field-trip program.
●
Design, edit, and proof online feature pages for each cultural institution participant in 2017-18 AHFES program.
●
Process and document Partnership Agreements, MOU's (Memorandum of Understanding), and other materials.
●
Coordinate with teachers and organization contacts to ensure timely/ accurate reminders, updates, and communications regarding field-trips/ professional development workshops.
●
Compile and analyze program and survey reports. Synthesize information to complete statistical briefings for DC Collaborative programs.
●
Other duties as assigned.
MEMBERSHIP
●
Coordinate communication between the DC Collaborative's base of membership organizations.
●
Help draft and edit our monthly newsletter
●
Help schedule and organize our quarterly Members Meeting
●
Support the work of our membership committee
●
Assist with data collection, analysis and maintain a database for our 2017-18 Members Mapping Initiative
●
Identify potential organizational partnerships and send prospective member communications.

Essential Qualifications
●
E
xcellent interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills.

Attention to detail and ability to focus in an open-office setting.

Ability to work on multiple and concurrent projects.

Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, G-suite, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
●
Prior internship experience in a non-profit setting.
●
Prior experience with DC Public and Public Charter Schools.
●
Working knowledge of Obvibase, and HTML or website applications.
