Children's Family Structure Remains Stable
Since 2016

Since 2010, children's family structure remains virtually unchanged. A majority of children resided with two biological parents in 2016, fewer than 10% lived with a stepparent, and nearly one-quarter lived with a single mother or father. In the new trio of American Children's Family Structure profiles, we document the characteristics of children's parents and family life including parental educational attainment, racial and ethnic composition, measures of poverty, and children's health insurance coverage. We focus on two biological parent families, stepparent families, and single-parent families in 2016.

2009 NCMR/AAHMI Grant Awardee Published in "Personal Relationships"

Tera R. Hurt
In 2009, the National Center for Marriage Research (NCMR) and the African American Healthy Marriage Initiative (AAHMI) (ACF, US Department of HHS) funded four proposals to support innovative research and new work on African American families that can be translated to a broad audience, including policymakers, practitioners, and educators.

Research by grant awardee Tera R. Hurt, Iowa State University, that culminated from the 2009 AAHMI grant was recently published in Personal Relationships. Hurt and her colleagues Jeffrey K. Shears, NC at Greensboro, Margaret C. O'Connor, Iowa State University, and Sharon B. Hodge, Black Family Preservation Group Inc., explore Black son's observations of fathers' teachings about husbandhood in their article
"Married Black men's observation of fathers' teachings about husbandhood."

Four BGSU Colleagues Published in "JFI"

Research by Professors and NCFMR Co-directors Susan L. Brown and Wendy D. Manning and Social Science Data Analyst Krista K. Payne titled "Relationship Quality Among Cohabiting Versus Married Couples" was recently published in the Journal of Family Issues (JFI). Using data from the nationally representative 2010 Married and Cohabiting Couples Survey of different-sex cohabiting and married couples, the team compares the relationship quality of today's cohabitors and marrieds.

"Shifts in Higher-Order Unions and Stepfamilies Among Currently Cohabiting and Married Women of Childbearing Age," by Karen Benjamin Guzzo, BGSU associate professor and CFDR associate director, also was published in JFI. Guzzo uses 1988 and 2011-2013 cycles of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) to examine the proportion of current cohabitations and marriages that are higher-order unions (e.g., remarriages, first marriages among those with prior cohabitations, and second or higher cohabitations) and stepfamilies among women aged 15 to 44 years.
