NYCOMEC Co-Sponsors NYITCOM's Sports Medicine Conference

NYCOMEC and NYIT Center for Sports Medicine co-sponsor Beyond the Sideline: Unique Athlete Populations conference that will take place on Monday, September 18, 2017, 8:45 a.m.-3:00 p.m., in the Rockefeller Auditorium, NYITCOM-Old Westbury Campus. 
 
Speakers will include:
  • Naresh Rao, D.O., FAOSM, head team physician for Men's USA Water Polo and author of Step Up Your Game;
  • Richard McCormack, M.D., orthopedist specializing in sports medicine who served as an assistant team physician for the New York Jets, New York Islanders, Hunter College, and the U.S. Open Tennis Championships;
  • Elizabeth Sandel, M.D., specialist in brain injury and researcher;
  • Matthew Heller, D.O., primary care sports medicine specialist and ringside physician for USA Boxing. 
The program anticipates being approved for 6 hours of category 1-A AOA CME credit and 6 hours of category A BOCATC CEU credit.

97th AOA Annual Business Meeting

The 97th Annual Business Meetings of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the national professional membership organization for the nation's osteopathic physicians, osteopathic medical students, and other members of the osteopathic medical profession, took place on the week of July 16, 2017, in Chicago, IL, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile Hotel.  The Annual Business Meeting of the AOA Board of Trustees (BOT) began on Tuesday, July 18 and concluded Thursday, July 20, while the AOA House of Delegates (HOD) convened its annual meeting Saturday, July 22, and concluded its sessions Sunday, July 23.

Dr. Broder Reelected as Vice Speaker of AOA House of Delegates
 
David L. Broder, D.O., NYCOMEC's President, was reelected for the fifth time as Vice Speaker of the AOA House of Delegates (HOD). He was originally elected as Vice Speaker in March, 2014. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Broder has served the AOA in other capacities, including Vice Chairman of the Council on Postdoctoral Training Institutions. He is also Past President of the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society and currently serves as its Parliamentarian.
NYCOMEC-NYIT Healthcare Leadership Certificate Course

Jerry Balentine, D.O., FACEP, FACOEP, Vice President, Medical Affairs and Global Health, New York Institute of Technology presented on Managing and Leading Change on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. The presentation, which outlines leadership skills all leaders should know about, was the latest session of the NYCOMEC-NYIT Healthcare Leadership Course which continues to engage a large audience.

The next presentation in the Healthcare Leadership Certificate Course will take place on Friday, September 15, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. The topic to be discussed is  Performance Improvement Using Lean Methodology/Team Building Skills , and will be presented by  Francis Yoo, D.O. , Associate Program Director, Integrated Family Medicine, Southampton Hospital. To ensure that our members have additional resources for Osteopathic Recognition, NYCOMEC provides each member institution with licensed access to the American College of Osteopathic Family Physician's (ACOFP) OMT Video Procedures Library. This online educational resource lets you view step-by-step demonstrations of over 150 osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) procedures.

Research and scholarly activity are important components in the current postdoctoral training environment. NYCOMEC is committed to foster and support research by its trainees. 

The Research Webinar Series is designed for both trainees and faculty, and provides an introduction and overview on conducting basic research.

Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments: Pathway Leaders Patient Safety Collaborative

Call for Applications

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is seeking up to 10 ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions to participate in the Pathway Leaders Patient Safety Collaborative. The collaborative will test a framework that places trainees on a deliberate pathway to engage with their learning environments in promoting a culture of safety. The
deadline to submit applications is 11:59 p.m. on August 15, 2017

Transitional Year Review Committee Focused Requirement Revisions

The Transitional Year Review Committee recently posted revisions to clarify requirements for the number of programs that a sponsoring institution and its participating sites must sponsor. 

Due to additional questions, the review committee's new focused revision seeks to provide clarifications.   View the focused revision in the impact statement.   Comments on the Transitional Year focused revisions are due by August 23, 2017

AAMC 2017 Resident Survey is Now Open in GME Track

The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC)  announced that the  2017 National GME Census Resident Survey is now open for ACGME programs at your institution to update and validate resident and fellow information.  The National GME Census consists of two surveys:
  • The Program Survey: used to update FREIDA OnlineĀ®, the American Medical Association's Residency & Fellowship Databaseā„¢, which contains information on all ACGME-accredited programs. Medical students and residents rely on FREIDA Online.
  • The Resident Survey: is a key data source to inform critical health care policy issues, such as GME funding, physician workforce projections, and specialty training needs. Confirmed training statuses also become part of each physician's training record in the AMA's Physician Masterfile.
The  Resident Survey deadline , and the P rogram Survey deadline  for the October FREIDA Online listing, is  September 29, 2017 .

Updated AOA-ABMS Board Certification Chart

The American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS) updated its specialty board certification eligibility requirements on July 20, 2017. These eligibility requirements apply for those interested in pursuing ABMS board certification during the transition to the single GME accreditation system. The AOA developed a chart that incorporates both ABMS and AOA board certification eligibility requirements by specialty to better assist students and residents in their career decision-making process.

NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn Receives $25 Million Gift from the Bezos Family Foundation

NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn , formerly NYU Lutheran Medical Center, announced a new name and a major philanthropic gift, marking a significant collaboration and unifying vision to improve the health and wellness of diverse populations across the Brooklyn community.  The philanthropic pledge of $25 million made by the Bezos Family Foundation will support major initiatives to help mothers, children, and families in the Brooklyn community.

Number of D.O.s Increased by Nearly 40% Over 6 Years, New Physician Census Reports

An article in The D.O. reports that there are now more than 81,000 actively licensed D.O.s in the U.S., according to the new data provided by the Federation of State Medical Boards.

NYITCOM's Martin Gerdes Honored for Contributions to Heart Disease Research

Martin Gerdes, Ph.D., C hair, Biomedical Sciences Department,  New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine ( NYITCOM ), has received the prestigious Hans Peter Krayenbuehl Memorial Award from the International Academy of Cardiology for his contributions to the field of cardiac function.
